Using Oil
 

Hey all
My bonnie seems to be using more then her fair share of oil. It's not blowing smoke or throwing and codes but it seems to be going through a litre of oil between oil changes maybe a little more.
I'm using 10w 30 full synthetic and had my car in at Canadian Tire to fix a slow leak in one of my tires. The mechanic said i should check the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) as it maybe plugged. Anyone heard of this and where might i find this PCV?

...see the white cover on the right side of that picture? That's where the PCV valve goes. Once the UIM is installed...looking from the front of the car, that will be on the left. Push down on the cover and twist off.

A bad PCV will cause higher oil consumption. It's only a few bucks to find out, as they're not very expensive.

Besides what Archon said, you might try some 10W-40. I've always believed that 10W-30 is for engines below 80K miles when everything is tight. How many miles are on yours?

MACDRIVE: The car has 129,000 kms on it and i'll consider the 10w 40 on my next oil change.

Archon: We checked the PCV valve and the hubby thinks it's fine, but said if it's a cheap part we'd replace it and see if it gets any better.

Any other ideas what could be causing it?

How long do you go between oil changes? If it's a normal period of time, a liter of oil really isn't much to worry about, especially as you have no other issues. Some engines just naturally go through more oil than others. It's really not enough to worry about.

129,000 km, which I believe is about 77,400 miles is not anwhere near high miles. I wouldn't suggest going with anything other than the recommended oil for the car, which is 5w-30, or 10w-30 in warmer weather.

I usually go about 5000 kms between oil changes and the hubby agrees with the oil. Doesn't really want to go to anything thicker than the 10w 30. We're gonna change the PCV on Tuesday and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Is Mobil 1 10W-30 being used???

We've been using Pennsoil.

If you're only going 5000kms between oil changes, you really don't need to spend the extra money on synthetic. I don't particularly care for Pennzoil of Quaker State. My personal preference is Valvoline - but there are other good ones, too.

I recommend that you switch to Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40. It is a synthetic blend that is very much on the thin side of 10W-40's. In fact it is the thinnest 10W-40 on the market being 13.9 cst @ 100C.

If you can't bring yourself to go 10W-40, then I suggest going with Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-30. It is on the thick side of a 10W-30's comming in at 12.1 cst @ 100C.
