turn signal flasher
 

Does anyone know what kind of turn signal flasher our cars use? I'm upgrading to LED lighting and need to get one of the "heavy duty" flashers so that they flash at the correct speed. Parts stores don't seem to know, and t here's like 8 different kinds out t here. Thanks. :)

A little bit of an update. Neither Advanced Auto or Autozone carry the flasher unit for this car. they said it's a "dealer only" part. Why is this? Does the dealer carry an electronic flasher for these cars, as opposed to the thermal flashers? The flash speed is o.k. if the car is running and the lights are off, but if the car is off, or the headlamps are on, the flash is insanely fast. I can't imagine an electronic flasher isn't available though because our cars can tow light trailers, and in order to have a trailer wired up, don't you need an electronic flasher so it doesn't flash too fast?

I searched AllData, and couldn't come up with anything to help you out. They have it listed as a "module" rather than a relay of flasher. There is also no part number listed for it.

As most trailers use the brake light as the turn signal, and our cars have separate bulbs, an after-market unit is installed to combine things. I'm not familiar enough with them to know if it may be wired from a separate power source which takes care of the extra current draw which would normally cause it to flash too fast, or not.

Usually flasher relays either have 2 or 3 prongs. Have you dug up under the dash to fnd where the flasher relay is? Or are you saying we don't have a flasher relay?

Remove the existing combination 4 way and signal flasher from front of dash. Pry open the flasher from the pin side. Remove the circuit board (you may have to use a screwdriver and pry between the case and black plastic connector) There is a 4.7ufd capacitor located in the middle of the board next to the relay. Remove it and relace it with a 22ufd 35vdc electrolytic capacitor(Radio Shac has them). Reassemble being carefull to align the bulb into the button on the front of the flasher. If you broke the clips holding the black plastic pin holder, it can be taped back together ith black electrical tape. No need for load resistors.
