0440 and 1440 at the same time
I had been running with the 0440 code for about 2 weeks when I finally took it in, found out the code, replaced the gas cap and cleared the code. It was good for about 3 weeks when today the SES came on, I took it in and now I have the 0440 and a 1440. I have had the 1440 before and replaced the EGR in Feb. of '05. It was definately bad, the solenoid was sticky and was replaced with an AC Delco part. Before I get carried away, I was wondering if anyone might know if these 2 codes could be related.

I had an evap code issue on my 97 Grand Prix that lasted till the check engine light burned out... That one is sometimes hard to find because the leak can be anywhere between the tank and the engine. Not sure if they changed the design on the 2000 and up models, but there is a plastic canister up front with a sensor that causes the code. It collects the fuel vapors, filters them and then sends them to the intake via vacume line. Suggest checking the vent lines back to the tank to make sure none or cracked or have fallen off. I know GM uses a smoke test to troubleshoot it.
I don't think the EGR issue would be related, usually a sticking valve will cause that code. I've taken them out and cleaned the crud off and oiled the shaft with good luck before. I do know they are not cheap to replace now days. $$$

If the codes are 0440 and 1441, yes they very well are related. I couldn't find a 1440 from Alldata, or in Techinfo
This is for code 1441
CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC
A continuous open purge flow condition is detected during the diagnostic test (fuel tank pressure decreases to less than -11 in. H2O).
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
The following conditions will set a DTC P1441.
* EVAP canister purge valve leaking internally.
* EVAP purge and engine vacuum lines switched at the EVAP canister purge valve.
* EVAP canister purge valve control circuit grounded.
Check for the following conditions:
* Incorrect vacuum line routing. Verify that the source vacuum line routing to the EVAP purge valve is correct and that the EVAP purge and source vacuum lines to the EVAP canister purge valve are not switched.
* Malfunctioning or damaged canister.
* Inspect for carbon release in the EVAP system.
For 0440
The following conditions will set DTC P0440:
* Missing, loose or malfunctioning fuel fill cap
* Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked EVAP purge line
* Disconnected or damaged EVAP vent hose
* Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked fuel tank vapor line
* A malfunctioning EVAP canister purge valve
* A malfunctioning EVAP vent valve
* Open ignition feed circuit to the EVAP vent or purge valve. This should also set DTC P0443 or P0449
* Damaged EVAP canister
* A Leaking fuel sender assembly O-ring.
* A Leaking fuel tank or fuel filler neck

The EVAP system is not able to achieve or maintain vacuum during the diagnostic test.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Inspect for the following conditions:
* A malfunctioning or damage EVAP canister.
* A loose, missing, defective or incorrect fuel fill cap.
* Incorrectly routed, kinked, pinched, plugged, or defective EVAP system vacuum and vapor pipes.
* Inspect for charcoal release from the EVAP canister.
This is for code 1441

Agree with Archon. These two DTC'* are related to the EVAP system, they are like equal and opposite DTC'*. When DTC P 0440 is set, basically its saying there is a breech (large leak) in the evap system & the evap system is unable to hold vacum. the PCM runs this routine to check evap system integrity. On the other hand when DTC P 1441 is set, it'* saying that there is vacum being applied to the evap system when there shouldn't be. (maybe the purge valve is leaking by when shut) as an example. I could not find a DTC P 1440 in the FSM.

I'll definately check the evap canister fittings and lines to the tank for leaks. The other code is a 1440 which is an EGR code. I'll try the cleaning and oiling of the valve. I called the place where I got the last one and they only have a 1 year warranty, which I missed by about 6 months. Might be another $180.

I pulled the EGR this morning and cleaned out the hole and torx head. Sprayed some brake cleaner and some JB80 and cycled it manually for awhile. Put it back in and noticed that I did not have the "chugging" when the car was in drive and sitting at a stop. Didn't have time to look at the evap system.

Travis, the 0440 code could easily be a vacuum line or connection leak. Matter of fact, that is the first place I would look before searching further or buying any parts. Check all the vacuum lines for cracks or splits, especially the rubber connectors, like the elbow and "T" ones. They are regular culprits. Even a relatively small crack or split will cause enough vacuum loss to set the P0440.
Like mentioned above in Archon' post, make sure you check the vac lines going to the evap. cannister and the purge valve and cannister itself while you are at it.

Just to be certain, the canister is located drivers side front of the engine compartment with the cone shaped doohicky on the top and sounds like a vacuum cleaner after the car is started, correct? I was a little unsure because I looked at it real quick when I was messing with the EGR and the only line I saw to it went to a hard line that connected to the firewall side of the engine. The kids have the car for the week and I'm leaving for sturgis on Saturday so I didn't have a lot of time to check it out, but will get back to it after that.

Assuming that you have a 2000+ series car, as that is the forum you've posted in, no - the canister is under the car. It'* a rectangular box roughly under the back seat, driver'* side of center. I can't say that I can picture what you are describing.
