I just went to my car to put back on my FWI since the weather has gotten back up into reasonable temps. Well, I look over at my coolant resevoir and noticed it has dropped, a lot. I check around the engine and the front looked ok and my oil still was clean, but when I looked towards the back LIM, that'* where it was blowing out of. It is everywhere. So, now it'* my turn to do this, I've got the alldatadiy with me and have some knowledge of what to do, but I'm asking for any tips or tricks you guys can help me with. Pics would be really helpful, if you have any around. Also, am I going to have to replace the upper gasket again to replace my lower?

I didn't do so much of a walkthrough but i have some pics from when i did mine last week... The best thing I can tell you is, the injectors have o-rings on each side. If you are missing the o-rings off the top of your injectors, check inside the edge of your fuel rail. Remove the fuel rail all as one unit, i used rope to tie mine up out of the way, you can see it in one of my pictures. Also, if you have a camera, take pictures as you go. You would think it'* easy to put back together, but you can save yourself a huuuuge headache.

Yeah, this may be a stupid question but am I going to have to replace my upper gaskets along with this? I had those done in 04 and they haven't let go yet.

I have done two LIM Gasket repairs. In both, the upper gaskets were fine. By upper i mean, the Throttle body gasket was fine, as well as the UIM gasket. The only other gasket I had to get was one for the Thermostat, becuase mine leaked after I put it back together.

Good, I know the uppers are fine. I'm glad those have already been done for me and I just replaced the t-stat gasket in August when I put in my 180 t-stat so I hope that'* still good.

I replaced my T-stat gasket in august also when I put my 180* in. But, for some reason mine leaked... oh well it was only $2.00

it may still be fine, but for peace of mind, i would use a new one.

and you may consider changing theinjector o-rings, coolant sensor, and valve cover gaskets while you have everything apart.

and you will need a tourque wrench rated for inch pounds

I suggest you either remove the T-stat housing and use a spray bottle sprayer to empty it of coolant or disconnect the lower radiator hose and run the car for as long as it takes to drain the coolant.
Reason for this:

To prevent leaking coolant into the engine when removing the lower intake manifold.

Seems this has been a growing problem the past few years when replacing the LIM gaskets, causing the bearings to sieze up.
Also, drain oil and leave drain plug out so if any coolant does get into the lower end it hopefully will just drain out. There will still be some coolant drops in the engine so, put oil back in upon reassembly of the upper end, and run the engine for no more than 2-3 minutes at idle. Then drain oil as well as replace filter.
Check oil before draining to verify upper intake reinstallation was done properly and no more coolant got into the engine/onto the block (with external engine visual inspection).

A little bit of a mental burden initially, but it could be a mental stress relief, as well as monetary insurance when you find your engine is good for another 100K+ miles.

Also, when refilling the coolant, save some money and get the regular green Prestone or the Prestone that is compatible with Dex-cool.

If you have to replace your LIM gasket you will have to replace the UIM gasket also.
You may be able to remove the UIM without removing the throttle body to save that gasket but all paper gaskets are one time use only........unless you use a messy sealant like RTV.
I never reuse gaskets, even if only on for six months, unless they are the reuseable rubber/metal type like your trani pan.

Well, it looks like this may be put off for the next couple of days. I got about halfway torn down and I've decided that I'm going with the aluminum gaskets, which I have to order, and the weather here in Indiana is about to get real bad tonight. So my Bonne is going to be just sitting in the garage waiting until this weekend.
