Default Transmission Issues

Driving today down the interstate and gave my car some gas on the on ramp and as I got to about 45 mph, the tach just started moving, but not the car. I was able to exit immediately and get somewhere to contemplate on the issue. I am ultimately looking for some guidance if I should just replace/rebuild the transmission (by someone, as this is beyond my realm of expertise). If I don't have to replace/rebuild I could bring the car home and do some work to see if I can fix.

Symptoms:
Code: P0757 Shift Solenoid B Stuck Open
After starting the car, I can shift to drive (or any other gear, 1/2/3/R) and go forward and get up to around 20 mph at which point the tach just goes up and car does not move. I can shut the car off and turn it back on and the process repeats. Thus, I am able to get about 100 yds each time. I am trying to decide if I can fix the issue, at which point I would bring the car home, or take it to a shop...

Transmission filter/fluid was changed 50k miles ago (currently at 182k miles).

From my reading on here it sounds like I could try to replace with the Dex fluid VI and new filter, but I am not sure that will help what I am getting??

Any guidance is appreciated.

More than likely the valve is stuck open and the PCM can't command it closed. So, its time to drop half the trans and remove the side cover to replace that valve. And I doubt any of the cans of chemicals will fix it. The 2000+ trans have issues with these valves.

Thanks, Mike.

I decided to take it into the shop as this repair would be out of my scope. I just got the call that the transmission is "shot." Hearing this from a mechanic shop was expected (path of least resistance). However, with 182k miles on the car, I'm likely to not argue.

The cost quoted was $1400 for a used transmission with 97k miles.

The other option quoted (verbally) was $2400 for a rebuilt one and $1000 labor, total of $3400. I am not sure if this is "reasonable" or if I should even do it, or just chuck the Bonneville.

My primary look here is for guidance on the prices quoted for the work, and what others think if I should repair or replace.

Thanks to all.

I would normally try to get a few quotes from different shops.
If you are wanting to keep the Bonny, a rebuild may be the best option as the shop will offer a full warranty on their work.
That being said, if it just need the valve / solenoids packs etc, you still can access them without removing the transmission, if there is no major clutch material in pan.
If I was to get a used transmission, I would still want the valve body inspected & updated before install.

Um no. Run. For $1400, you can get a GM Certified rebuilt trans with a helluva better warranty. Unless that was $400 for the trans and $1000 for labor.

$1000 seems a tad high. According to Alldata, its 7.3 hours labor time to R&R a trans. 7.3/$1000=$136 per hour the shop is charging you. I work in a big truck shop, our labor rate is $99.50 per hour.

I suggest getting a second opinion.

Second/third quotes are being obtained. Just so happened there was an AAMCO a mile from my house. It is more of a "local" guy and I chatted with the owner. He too felt I was being "ripped off" at the other shop (as I presumed as well). He suggested to take the transmission out and he can take a look to see if it should be rebuilt or, as Mike suggested, put in a certified rebuilt from GM. Overall, this guy seemed more legit.

I will report back to close out the thread.

It'* quite annoying that we can't trust these repair shops. It is situations like this that make it look bad for other shops...

I noticed you are in Milwaukee. There is a major transmission rebuilder located right in Milwaukee that supplies rebuilt transmissions nationwide, their web-site is The Transmission Authority .

They don't advertise it, but they have a retail repair shop in Milwuakee under their former name. You might want to take a look at what they have to offer.

I searched old e-mails and can't find their name. Probably calling the transmission exchange and asking about their Milwaukee retail service shop could get the name identified.

I like the idea, that if in Milwaukee and needing a trans, no core charges, no shipping, dealing direct with a major re-builder- seemed like a good way to go.

The Transmission Authority is a subsidiary of Engine and Transmission Exchange - this might be it:
