Advanced Auto says DON'T put 180 T-stat in my '04 SE
Both of the guys in the store told me that changing the stock 195 t-stat to a 180 t-stat will screw up the computer.
Do they know what they're talking about or not?
Your opinions? Experience?

please DO NOT listen to parts store guys, they are 99% stupid. a 180* t-stat will do NO harm whatsoever to your car. a 160* will require a custom programmed computer so it wont set a trouble code but a 180 is perfect ( MANY other mambers, myself included have them with no problems)

That is the number one thing you should know... TAKE WHAT THE PART STORE GUYS TELL YOU WITH A GRAIN OF SALT - 99% OF THEM JUST KNOW WHAT THE COMPUTER SAYS. If they were so smart and knew cars so well they would be a mechanic.

Even it was cold enough to "screw up the computer" it wouldn't actually screw anything up, your Service Engine Soon light would come on and thats about it. A 180* will not set that light however and will cause no harm to your car at all. The autoparts guys here don't even tell me that crap anymore. I go in there like every day and they've learned that I don't listen to what they say anyways, so when I go in there and say I want something, they just give it to me.

THANKS folks!
I thought that the 180* would be fine. As someone stated, their computer only gives a part number for the 195* t-stat. Does anyone know what I can tell them that will yield the part number for a 180* t-stat?
This is a small town area, so auto parts choices are rather limited. THANKS for the help!

I've always been able to get one at Autozone...they're usually in their computer. If not you should be able to bring yours in there (if you have another car to drive to the autoparts store or can get someone to give you a ride) and have them get you one that is the same physical size but 180* instead of 195*.

hey toasted oats, I had same explaination givin to me at Mr.Goodwrench...05GXP PCM is too complex to change out for lower thermostat, will pull timing and set choke and something else but I was to busy choking on $58 dollar invoice he was handing me for a synthetic oil change. I hold the same view about parts guys, but I've known the service manager for a long time and he aint no parts guy. still scratchin my head on this one and dont know if I should do it myself.
