rear brakes
 

Hey guys, I have a few questions. I am gonna be replacing my rear brake rotors and pads this week and I noticed the last time that I changed them, I accidently ripped the piston boot on one of the calipers. Should I replace the caliper? Also, I dont have an emergency brake anymore. I had one before changed them though. is there something common that causes the e brake to be messed up during a rear brake change? I have to admit, I was fighting with the things to get them changed and was in a rush so I wasnt exactly caucious

what messed up on your ebrake was probably a seized cable had it on mine (both sides). now on the boot are you talking about? the ones for the sliders or the one around the piston? either way i say replace it to be safe. sometimes you can just get the boot for the sliders but not the piston

On the rear brakes you need to actually turn the piston to adjust the mechanical part of the brake to the thickness of the new pads, If you didn't adjust them correctly that could cause the parking brake to not work properly.

When you pushed the piston in to remove them, did you turn the piston first or just push it in?

I just pushed it in with a c clamp :-(

The rear calipers need to get turned in to compress the piston. I would replace the entire calipr. There is a special tool to turn those in that fits on a 3/8 ratchet

Chances are you damaged the parking brake. Like mentioned, it needs to be rotated first. There is a write up about doing rear brakes in the mechanical section. Changing the caliper is easy. Just undo the bolt holding the brake line on and change it. Be sure to bleed the brakes real good.
