Please help! Service Engine Light Problem
I have a 02 SE with 116,000 miles. My Service engine soon light is on and I have taken it to autozone to have the codes pulled. They tell me that something is wrong with my diagnostic port because it will not power up the diagnostic tool. The car runs great! Has anyone had this problem? If so, what do I need to do? Also, my ac/heat blower acts up and doesn't want to blow sometimes. I have heard about solder problems in the blower. Anyone replaced their blower motor? If so, anyone have the instructions?

This is the scanner for your car. You might as well buy it because if you pay the dealer to scan your codes, it'* going to cost you a $100 anyway. This way you get something for your money.
I suspect Autozone was using the wrong scanner or something was wrong with their scanner.

My guess it is their scanner, I had this same problem. If there is another autozone around go there and get a different scan, or go back to where you went and have them use a different scanner i believe most have two that they can use. there scanners are well used so the plug gets worn and wont work(on our cars ). Before you buy a scan tool, What is you goal with your car?
There are basically two types a code reader or a scan tool. If your car will always see stock parts and you just want the most basic abillity to read the stored codes get a code reader. If your really into fixing everything and or modding get a scan tool.
Does your car have manual controls on the AC or is it the automatic climate control?
My understanding is that you can set the auto system into a diagnostic mode with the correct series of button pushes/holds.

If you have the dual auto unit, there is a blower control module on the heater box close to the blower motor that gives trouble. Check to see if you have power tot he blower motor when it doesn't want to work. Then work backward from there. Make sure the ground is good.
The blower control module does what the resistors do on the earlier speed adjustment for blowers.

Thanks. I actually went to 2 different auto zone locations. They told me that maybe a fuse that is blown that controls the data port or a wire is damaged which seems weird to me. Guess I will have to purchase a scanner to see if I can get to the bottom of this cause the dealership will want too much. Everything is stock on it and at this time I don't plan on doing any mods. My car has the manual controls for the ac/heat unit. Nothing electronic or digital, and it doesn't have dual controls. This morning I noticed the blower blows at different speeds. It blows slower when i brake and speeds up when I accelerate. Kinda sounds like a connection problem.

Thanks MACDRIVE
They did have the ignition on when they hooked up the scanner. They said it has to be something wrong with my diagnostic port and not their scanner. They tested the scanner in another car and it came on immediately, so they told me some cars have a fuse that runs the diagnostic port and the fuse could be blown.

I had not thought about the gas cap. Whenever I get gas I try to let it click about 3-4 times to make sure the cap closes properly.

Ok everyone, I went to a newer autozone today and they were able to check for codes. It was p0402. They told me it probably is my oxygen sensor (before the converter) since a new converter was put on back in January 06. Does anyone know where this sensor is? I'm planning on changing it myself.
