Default water pump eats timing chain cover!

OK it isn't as bad as it sounds, I think. Gotta ask though, my water pump went out today and when I tore it down to change it the vanes on the pump had chewed a gouge about 3/16" deep 1 1/2" long into the face of the timing chain cover. How bad is this? just curious. thanks again.

OH and I will be getting the system flushed tomorrow to get rid of all the aluminum shavings that are no doubt infecting my engine/radiator.
