no power to wiper motor

no power to wiper motor
2003 Pontiac Bonneville 6 cyl. The wipers don't work. We bought a new motor after checking the fuse. Still no action. Shouldn't there be voltage at the switch on the steering column when you have the key in the on position (that'* just before the start position. It'* called acc. but it'* not the counterclockwise acc position.) We took the dash apart to get to the harness before the switch and there'* no voltage there. And of course none at the switch itself. There is continuity on the ground terminal at the motor plug and the switch terminal. We pulled the fuse and there is 12V at that point but unless I'm missing something there is a break between the fuse point and the wiper switch. So my main question is shouldn't there be voltage at the switch it'self when you have the key in the on position? We tried with the car engine running but nothing.

The voltage that runs the wiper motor does not run through the wiper motor switch. The switch activates a relay, and the relay sends voltage to the wiper motor. You probably have a bad wiper motor relay.

You were right. That'* what it was but still doesn't there have to be some voltage at the switch for it to communicate to the relay? There was none.

There may have been no voltage to the switch because the relay was defective. Check for voltage at the switch now that you have a good relay installed, and you may get a different result.
