Default A few outer tie rod replacement notes

Sorry no pics, phone ran out of battery during this procedure.

Replaced the outer tie rods on the 2001 Bonneville super easy. Below are a few notes;

If your car is a northern car, you likely will not be able to remove the nut that holds the rod in place, be prepared to cut the nut

Use PB blaster on the nut and also on the threads where the inner and outer tie rod connect

Make sure you break free the nut that snugs the inner tie rod and outer tie rod together. This is hard to break free once the outer tie rod is disconnected from the control arm.

Count your rotations when removing the outer tie rod. When replacing, use same amount of rotations to know where to stop

Consider your replacement tie rod with a lubable zirk fitting, MOOG makes em.

Overall a very easy job.

I back off the jam nut and spray the threads between the jam nut and the outer tie rod end with white paint, or mark them with a white grease pen. That gives you a mark to line the new tie rod end to.

Roy,

You replaced the inner tie rods on your 2001 Bonneville. How did you determine they were bad? I didn't replace my inners, and I am at 171k miles.

There was play in the wheels that was not coming from the outers. Now that you have new outers, grasp the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and push and pull to feel for play. If you detect no play your inners are okay.
