Default Diagnostic codes?

I am curious... isn't there a way pull diagnostic codes manually, without a scanner? I seem to recall at least on early OBDI that you could jump a couple pins and it would flash the check engine light to display the codes that were stored... I don't recall for sure though. May have been on one of my Fords from back in the day.

My issue is this... 2002 SSEi that was having some issues with not always starting... well, now it is not only having that problem, but it has just randomly died a few times driving down the road. It will definitely be going into shop to be checked early this week, but if I can pull codes myself, I would like to have a list of codes to compare... and check to see that I can trust the shop... just not completely comfortable with our local shop yet...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You would need a code scanner to get the codes. Stop at a place like autozone and have them scan it.

And in answer to your question, yes, you could jumper pins on the OBD I port on both GM and Ford, but that ended when GM introduced OBD 1.5 <1994> and when Ford introduced OBD II <1996>. Your vehicle, as was said previously, will need to have any codes pulled with a code scanner.

Thanks for the responses... at least I know I wasn't crazy about the old jumper trick. I'll swing into Advanced Auto or O'Reilly'* later today and see if they will scan for me. As always... you guys are on the ball... THANKS!
