Wouldn't you know I had this come on about 15 miles away from the dealer. Weird part is that only the "service stability system" text shows up on the DIC, but nothing else...no ABS light, no TC light, no nothing, and it continues to drive and steer just fine. So far its only come on once more (just today on the way to work) and I only need to press either the Select or Reset buttons on the right side of the DIC or w/e that area is called with the nifty buttons.

I search the forums for previous instances of this and contacted haro about his previous problem and he gave me some Ohm and Voltage numbers to check.

I'm thinking, and rationalizing, that this could simply be corrosion on the connectors because nothing else is complaining. Will simple electric cleaner spray do the job?

Have you had your intermediate shaft lubed or changed out.Ive had service stability system message since I owned the car about a year and have no issues.When I lubed my shaft I saw that it was already done before as the rubber cover had been slit.I think this disturbs the steering wheel position sensor taking the shaft out.

I'll have to check. I can hear a faint click when I turn the wheel a good half turn, so I'm sure I need to lube/replace it in within 10k miles.

If it does disturb the steering wheel position sensor how is the issue resolved? With a new sensor or some sort of calibration?

Nothing else will complain as a result of that message. However, the Stabilitrak system will not be functioning. That is what is designed to pull the car out of a sideways, or spinning skid.

If the intermediate shaft is removed from the car, care must be taken to not disturb the position of the steering wheel, or damage will be done to the sensor and/or bearings. If that precaution is taken, just removing the shaft should have no ill affects on the sensor. I've had mine out for various reasons about 4 or 5 times, without any issues. There'* a techinfo article on removing, lubing/replacing, the intermediate shaft.

You can try cleaning the contacts and see if that helps. Replacement of the sensor has generally been needed.

So are you suggesting to not worry about the wheel speed sensors and just worry about the steering wheel sensor? Also, do they have a habit of just going bad even if the shaft as never been serviced yet?

The wheel speed sensors should set a traction control or ABS code if they are bad. Other components are the yaw rate sensor, and lateral accelerometer. Those have been pretty reliable, though.

The sensor goes often enough for there to be a TSB on replacement. I'm not sure about them going all by themselves, as it would be a rare occasion to find a 00+ (except for maybe the newest ones) Bonneville that hasn't had to have the ISS serviced.

I have yet to check if the shaft has been serviced, but the message came on again this morning on my way to work. My theory is its happening when I hit rough bumps and/or take sharp turns. Its hard for me to confirm this because I have music too loud to hear the chime, but I tend to look down often (its a new car, I'm paranoid). When I DO look down and see that the message is lit up its been in an area with rough roads or sharp on/off-ramps.

I work in downtown Rockford and I get there via the bypass highway. Well Rockford has some VERY crappy roads with many bumps and poorly patched areas. I try to avoid these best I can, but I take this one road that just sucks. Also the on/off-ramps to the bypass are some wicked NASCAR design where they take on a steep bank and turn almost violently. If I go over 45 the car would probably fling right off the freakin road!

Kinda wierd, but whenever I take a ramp or drive on that particular "road of doom" I've noticed the Service Stability System light to come on. I think something is loose...

Next time you head down that road, turn down the radio and see if you can find out what sets it off. I did have a situation a few years back where if the right rear hit a sharp bump in a particular way, it would set off the warning. It had to be sharp enough for the tire to lose contact with the road for a short time. I replaced that hub, due to noise, but also replaced the rear shocks. I haven't had a problem since, but can't say if it was the hub or shock replacements that fixed it.

Well I took the same road in to work today and no warning. Frickin' electronics will drive me insane I tells ya!

On my way home from taking my boys to school this morning, my service stability system light came on. What does it mean and how much is this going to cost me? My 2000 Bonneville SSEI has 74000 miles on it. The owners manual doesnt tell me what this means. PLEASE HELP!!!!
