Default Volt Gauge reading

Ok, so hubby and I were in my car and he says "your car is running on too high voltage." WTF? It is always between 14 and I guess it would be 16 if "16" was indicated....in other words, it runs between "half and 3/4" comparing it to the gas gauge....which is in the "normal" range....I think he just had to find something to say about my new car.....

Mine always reads 12 volts when I turn the key (before I start the car) but reads 14 volts after the car has started. Seems normal to me. Try to check it before you start the car.

Deb:
My Bonneville reads the same as yours. This is a normal reading.

The nominal battery voltage is 12.6 volts. In order for the battery to be charged, a current has to be sent through the battery in the opposite direction of when it discharges. That'* just another way of saying that the voltage has to be higher than the battery'* voltage. Mid 14'* would be about right for a charging voltage, depending on the condition of the battery'* charge. 15 volts would be getting a bit high, and 16 volts could indicate a problem in the charging circuit/voltage regulator. Usually, the voltage meter in the car is sort of a good approximation of the actual voltage.
