Default gas smell !

I have had a 2000 Bonneville for about 6 months now and I am getting a gasoline smell. It is strongest under the hood, but it is evident outside the car and sometimes inside too. I have looked all over the engine compartment and can not find any evident gas leaks even under the engine cover. Has anyone had this problem? I have not had a chance to put the car on a lift to check out the underside. I see no drips under the car. It was suggested that there might be a vapor cannister that is either hooked up wrong or not working correctly. Thanks, Bill

The vapor cannister is under your car by the back seat. Check the vacuum fitting on your fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Pull it off and see if any gas leaks out of it, or if it smells like gas. If that is the problem, repair it asap, and try not to drive the car until repaired, as it can lead to an explosion and fire.

Do you consistently fill the car past the first click of the pump?

Don't usually top off the tank. I'll try to pay attention to see it it is worse after a fillup. I will check the lines to the regulator. I did look over everything on the motor and didn't see any leakage. I'll look some more. Thanks, Billk

The reason for my asking.... it is possible to overfill and that fills the charcoal cansiter..and then the canister can smell.

With the charcoal cannister under the car in the back, I'd expect your heavy smell to come more from there than under the hood. It could be possible for the vent solenoid to pull some of it into the engine compartment if you have a slight leak in the line. I'd expect that to set a code, however.

Edit - Also, some with the 2000+ have had trouble restarting the car when they overfill it a bit to top it off.
