Default Loud humming from under dash when heating fan is on.

This morning i drove to work with a loud humming under the dash of my car. It'* definatly something to do with the heater fan as the sound stops if i turn the fan off. It hums on any setting, windshield direction, feet direction, etc.

Is my blower motor failing? Or something else? How long until it completely dies? What is the normal cost of repair? Is this something i can fix myself?

My car is a 2002 pontiac bonneville with $178,000km.

Mallory, do me a favor....when you have time go out by your car and find the blower motor. Then check all the screws holding it to the HVAC system that they are all tight.

You could also turn on the blower motor then apply pressure to the back side of it to hear if that changes the humming noise.

Its not uncommon for these blowers to loose there fan balance over time. If the screw are tight and pushing on the back side changes the noise then you may just need a new blower...

One of my Bonneville'* had this same problem. Ended up being a couple loose screws.

See if this is the case and get back to us when you can.

It could last a long time. Depends if it drives you nuts enough to just replace the blower.

loose screws, or you have some debree inside the fins, when was the last time you changed your cabin air filter? usually blower motors cost between $100-200

i just price a rebuilt blower motor with fan and it was only $40 after core which was $30 but you get it back
it is not very hard to do it yourself, u only need to know how to use a screwdriver and
if it helps take a picture of it before you take it out

My wife had an issue with her Bonnie one time. I tore the motor out, and ducts and found the culprit- actually two things- some papers that got through the dash (stacks of coupons), into the blower- and a skeleton from what I presume to be a mouse- and a stash of black oil sunflower seeds. Same kind we have in the tubs in the garage labeled "bird feed" what a coincidence! She remembered a bad smell that just went away- then all I did was romanticize the struggle and despair that mouse must have went through-what a way to go-reminds me of the -Count of Monte Cristo-
