One of the more common reasons and a nice one is a loose gas cap. Does not cost a lot to fix it.

Are you talking about the "Service Engine Soon", or the "Service Vehicle Soon" light? There are 2 lights on the 00+ clusters.

Here, read this techinfo article:

2000-2005 DTC (PCM Trouble codes) listing

Not all these things will make your SES light go on, but this shows you all the potential reasons.

And yes, if your oil pressure gets way too low or your oil level reaches dangerous levels, it will light. Just do yourself a favor and don't wait that long....ever.

I don't think it will tell you when to change the oil. Your owner'* manual tells you how often to change the oil. Stick to that.

I know a alot about the SES "Service Engine Soon" light. Our 00-05 vehicles have another light that says "Service Vehicle Soon." I was wondering what makes that light come on (the service vehicle soon light). I haven't ever seen this light before...

I know when to change the oil.. trust me.. .. My mom'* intrigue has a light that says "change oil"... since our cars don't have this light, I thought maybe the "Service Vehicle Soon" light replaced that light.

I am more interested in what sensors monitor the vehicle and not so much the engine.

OK, so here'* a discussion on another open forum regarding your question.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/t373265.html

Note that they don't even reach a concensus as to it'* exact purpose, lol.

Then there'* this, from the Grand Am Owners Club:
The Service Vehicle Soon (SVS) light indicates a problem with the body electrical system. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) associated with this Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) cannot be read with standard OBD scanners like those at Autozone, etc. In order to read these codes, you will have to take your car to a proper GM mechanic.

However, the most common cause of a Service Vehicle Soon (SVS) light is a burned out or disconnected headlamp bulb. Check that all your exterior lamps are functioning. That includes high/low beams, parking lamps, signal lamps, and brake lamps.

The Service Vehicle Soon (SVS) Light should not be confused with the Service Engine Soon (SES) light, which indicates a problem with the vehicles powertrain.
And this from automotivehelper . com:
A Service Vehicle Soon Light indicates a fault with the SAFETY systems of your vehicle..Usually a burned out headlamp will turn on the light..
Replacing the affected bulb will cause the light to reset.

From AllDataDiy...
Description and Operation

SERVICE VEHICLE SOON INDICATOR
Also known as "SERVICE TELLTALE" lamp or "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON" lamps, these lamps are used to inform the technician that a Non-Emissions releated malfunction of the Computerized Engine Control System or Body Control System has occurred, (a DTC has occurred). The "SERVICE TELLTALE" lamps are checked for proper operation while the engine is cranking, and will turn off after the engine is running.

Depending on the trouble code set, the "SERVICE TELLTALE" lamp or the "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON" lamp will come on and stay on while the malfunction is taking place. If a malfunction is intermittent, the service lamp that came on will go out when the malfunction is no longer detected by the computer.

Service and Repair

SERVICE VEHICLE SOON INDICATOR
If this light is on, it indicates a problem in one of the electronically monitored systems (a non-emissions related powertrain malfunction). This light does NOT come on at certain mileage intervals.
There is probably a Engine Control Module (ECM) or a Body Control Module (BCM) Code set that will aid you in diagnosis.

RESET PROCEDURE
The only way to get the light to go off is to clear the ECM or BCM code(*).
This light can NOT be reset or shut off any other way.
ECM/BCM codes should be read & repaired before clearing them.

Now that I know what it is... I wonder if anyone has ever had their light on... the topic doesn't seem to ever come up.
