Default Cold Air, revisited

Ok guys, Don't kill me for rehashing this. I've been studying the CAI and Ram Air kits available for a mess of other cars, and researching possible components for rigging something from available components.

I came accross this, http://www.electricsupercharger.com/ which at first, I was going to disregard as nonsense, but then a thought occurred to me. What if you ducted a hose from the inlet side of the airbox down to the grille, headlight, fog lamp, or where ever, and inline on that new hose, you had one of these E-Rams to pressurize the airbox?

I know the boost claims are low for this thing, but would it be worth trying? I know you'd want to maybe replace the accordian tube connecting the Tb with the box, to smooth the flow, but it seems like this additional boost would be beneficial. And before Hector ridicules me for wanting to keep the airbox, I just want to say, I am not married to it, but since its there already... Pressurizing the airbox seems to address the issue of restriciton, and if a scoop or a ducted fan could do it without leaching power or causing backpressure on the exhaust?

I know this is a lob, so take your shots.

Here'* my theory on your idea (coincidentally, I just ran into a problem like this at work in trying to exhaust the heat from a laser power supply chiller.....only last week):

In simple terms, your SC will be pulling more air thru the intake than that electric joke can provide. You will overpower it at about 1500 rpms, or about equal pressure on the boost gauge at least. After that point, it'* going to FIGHT you. It will restrict the incoming air. Unless you're planning on putting 5 of them in parallel, don't bother.

Give me credit.....I didn't laugh at you! It was a good question. You've been thinking alot about this. I think the ultimate solution is a true ram pickup.

The electric supercharger wont be able to pressurize the airbox #1. #2, pressurizing the airbox would not kill the restriction, have you looked at it lately? The hole after the filter is tiny. NO matter what you think or try, you cannot keep using the stock box. Simple. Just accept it. Let it go. Keep your box for smog or hang it on the wall for a trophy. But keeping the stock box will only hold you back no matter what you do. Even if you hooked a Centrifgal supercharger to stuff air into the airbox, it would still be restricted.

Thanks for not laughing. Anyhow, it seemed intriging. I don't think it would be fighting you, since the thing would only be like a pinwheel unless you floor it. The concept has merit, I believe, but whether or not this is truly a joke, isn't so clear to me. Admittedly, there are a lot of discussion threads on the net ridiculing this.

There is a video clip of this thing, where the guy revs it and lets it go (its wired but not otherwise secured) and it takes off. At that price, its too expensive to experiment with, but who knows.

Anyhow, I have an idea I am playing with. I'll make sure I take pictures and let you know how well it works.

I hate it when Hector beats around the bush and won't say what'* on his mind...

Must think OUTSIDE the box, right Hector?

That little fan is trying to run at a particular RPM. I think (if I remember correctly) it'* like 12k RPM'*. It can't move enough air to supply the demand of the SC, so what happens? It'* trying to move at one speed, and your incoming air is already running faster. It RESISTS the incoming air at this point.

If you want more air, open that sucker up and feed it with a ram. If you want colder air, use an intercooler or (don't hurt me Hector) water or water/alcohol injection.

Disclaimer

Water injection can be VERY dangerous and unhealthy to your engine. It can go BOOM when hydrolock catches up with you. (and Hector really hates the idea)

Yes, I built my own water injection for VERY cheap. BUT......I spent HOURS designing a multiple failsafe VERY COMPLICATED circuit to control it. There were times it wasn't even fun, but I had a point to prove. No, I'm not done, yes, it works, and no, I don't reccommend anyone else doing this. It'* not worth the time and effort needed to make it really safe.

What do you want from me? I understand that you have ideas and want more power and it'* always good to ask questions like this. I am sure other people are curious if they can still use their stock airbox for performance. What else do you want me to add iRocco?

Willwren - Actually if you put a that electric supercharger, it wont restrict the air that much because it is similar to a computer fan. It runs on ball bearings and because its is so light (plastic fins) it just spins faster when the engine (*/C) sucks in more air. I looked into this and tried this on a car. I designed it so it spun up faster w/ rpm, blah, blah, computer controlled. It was crazy stuff. Man... you got Jeffery into doing water injection. If you blow up your car, I will record my laught0AWillwren - Actually if you put a that electric supercharger, it wont restrict the air that much because it is similar to a computer fan. I might even be tempted to deliver it personally and then steal your engine..... yeah.

I am going to make you a HUGE image of Disclaimer water injection and put it in your signature. Need to scare people away from it. My partner agrees.... bad vibes...

I know it'* scary. That'* why I spent so much time designing it. You already know my failsafes, but others don't. I'm not going to give specifics in public and have people thinking it'* safe if I do. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if someone tried to copy me and it went BOOM.

Jeffrey....if you're really gonna do it, you're really gonna do it, and we won't stop you. I WILL give you some very strong warnings and some specific instructions on failsafing it the best possible way.

Quite frankly, for the price ofa quality commercially available water injection system, you could have a hood with dual rams and heat extractors. That'* the way to go.

I really built it to satisfy my own curiosity. Will I keep it? I don't know yet. We'll see what summer brings. I will at least get as far as an alcohol mix, just so I know. What'* next if I don't keep it? I may make my own intercooler. They're very expensive, but I can make one for a fraction of the cost. It'll take some time on the mill, but that'* called 'playing', not 'work'.

Hector,

All I want is what you already give. Tough love, bro. I'll take that kind of honesty anytime. You don't know how glad I am to have someone like you guys to bounce these ideas off of. Don't take it personally if I keep asking questions even after you've given advice. Its my nature to be quizzical.
