Default Some code #'*

I have some code #'*. If anyone can tell what do they mean and what do you have to do to fix it. All I know it has to do with emissons. # 1404 and it'* either P0440 or 00440. Also the Service engine light is on and check gas cap. Thanks again.

Common problem, replace the gas cap if you think its got a poor seal. It will take a lot of start (on) stop (off) ignition cycles before it clears.
Does your scanner clear codes? If so and the code came back then I suspect you need a new fuel cap.

Or if the new gas cap does't resolve the problem (after so many start cycles as called out by PontiacDad) then there may be a very minor vacum leak in the EVAP system. Just a thought.
