Default Fuel level sensor

My '04 SLE has had a totally unreliable gas gauge for a year or more, always full or empty. I've been using the trip odo and the fuel-used monitor and no probs. I'd really prefer to have a working gas gauge. I've viewed the lever replacement you tube, looks like the way to go with just the gray lever replacement. Any reason to go with the full pump replacement for a 99k Bonnie? Any other ideas?
