Helicopter trapped in driver side wheel
 

My 02 Bonneville sounds like a propeller or a helicopter is trapped in the left front wheel when I am accelerating to the right only. When I let off the gas it stops making the noise. I checked the hub bearings for looseness and they are tight. Is this my cv shaft or something else? How would I go about checking the shaft? Thanks...

I forgot to mention that I just had new tires, tie rod ends and an alignment done. Fixing to put rear shocks on because the rubber for the air shock on the driver side has busted. I just bought the car and it is so far a money pit!!

The Grand Prix's around the same year would have the bendix spring on the starter go bad, and when you turned right it would sound like something hitting a fan blade, which kind of sounds like what you are describing.
I am not sure how to verify that is the issue, and I would feel bad if I am wrong and you were to replace it to no avail.
But if you take it to somebody to look at it, mention the starter, and ask about a bendix spring...

Probably the CV joint. Jack the tire off the ground and see how much play there is when rotating the wheel. Use the opposite side for comparison. Reach underneath and see how much play there is in the half shaft. Again, use the other side as a comparison.

thanks guys. I had the front end in the air yesterday and shecked the play on the driver side rotating it back and forth after checking the play in the bearing hub and there is quite a bit of play rotating it but I didn't check the passenger side by rotating it. I will check it asap and compare. I also cranked the car with the front end on jack stands put it in gear and tried to duplicate the problem and it didn't do it.

It sounds a lot like a flat tire only not quite as loud. after it was back on the ground I had my wife crank it, put it in gear with her foot on the brake and push the gas pedal and noticed that the engine seemed to raise quite a bit. It raised enough that I noticed the air box for the air filter moving up a little from the tube from the box to the motor pulling it up when the engine raised.I'd say the transmission mount raised close to an inch off the cross member toward the firewall.

It sounds like you need to check the engine and transmission mounts to rule those out. That gen is notorious for breaking one of the mounts in the front. If your engine is not staying put when power is being applied, than it is stressing other components like CV joints and such.

Check the marshmallow mount at the front of the engine to the radiator cross member. It's not a matter of if they will fail, it is a matter of when they will fail. They all fail.

A stock replacement will likely break again.

Hocky pucks are very firm, however the enthusiast find it liveable.

Another forum has also advocated the use of 4" boat rollers, because the rubber is a bit more compliant, but still does a good job.
