Heated Seat doesn't stay on
 

I need help with my factory heated seats for a 2001 bonneville ssei. :( Basically, right after I turn my heated seat on, it makes a clicking noise and shuts right back off. I think I may have a bad element or module. I need help on which to replace and how to troubleshoot the problem. Also, does anyone have a wiring diagram for the seat and how to get to the elements.

The element is shot and will have to be replaced (I've done this 3 times now).

had the same thing happen to mine. element is gone...they want $900 to fix it tho :-(

You can change the element yourself for under $100. Check the module under the drivers seat for which element is gone with an ohm meter (5 ohms). There are 3 total.

wow that's awesome news! I was told it was sewn into the seat and that the whole seat bottom had to be replaced? Alos i was told i had to disable the side air bags?

I have a FLUKE meter that will test the ohms, are there simple instructions as to where to test? sorry i know it sounds like i know nothing, but on this subject i don't!

As I've been there 3 times already I'll help you through it. And you do have a good meter, know how to use it?
Why would you have to disable your air bag cause the seat heater doesnt work?
Onward:
Move the seat all the way forward, now remove the two nuts at the front of the seat cushion.
Now lift the front cushion up some to get access to the heated seat module.
There are two connectors, one with 9 wires and one with only 4 wires.
Disconnect the one with only 4 wires, with your fluke meter on ohms measure from the bottom left pin to the top right pin with locking tab facing up on the connector.
You should read 5 ohms or less. IF the resistance is high like 400 to 10000 ohms the element is bad.
If you do read 5 ohms the the control module is suspect.

I have a question? If an element is bad, how do you actually get to the element within in the seat. I need an example for the bottom and the lumbar elements. If someone could help me out with this, that would be great. Thnx!

One more thing, this is for Pontiac Dad. When you said remove the two nuts in the front of the cushion, did you mean move the seat back to get better access?

The two nuts are at the front of the seat, move the seat all the way forward to see them. You could feel back there with the seat in the normal posistion but its easier with the seat pulled forward.
This will not allow you to remove the seat just gain access to the heated seat module where the element is plugged into. And there is only one connection for all 3 elements, only one element may be bad, hopefully just the bottom.....back cushion is a big job.
Take a look at the seat, you have to remove it to change out the elements. Does this look like something you would want to do?

I'm pretty sure its the bottom element, because right before it stopped working the left side of it would get BURNING HOT, so hot your couldn't sit on it. I will let you know the results.

I've been hunting around the shop looking for the part number but have misplaced them (time to clean the shop?).
If it the bottom element thats great cause the back elements require the removel of the side air bag and seat belt mechanisms.
Is this the drivers seat or passenger seat?

i just found out that it is covered under the GM certified used car warranty (3mo./3000mi).... So case closed....

But if this happens again in the future when I am not covered, I am sure I will be back with more questions..

My feelings are that the element breaks when you sit in the seat and its still cold?
I live in northern Canada so I've gone threw 3 already. The first time took the whole weekend, I was too scared to really pull on certain trim pieces. Thats part of the problem too, everything is snap together and the seats are heavy.

Did you dig into it yet?
You could disconnect the bottom element and just use the back I think?
A lot of work to get at the harness but a quick fix if your in need?

summer should be here soon *crosses fingers* so i may just wait. But it hasn't been above 40 in a while so who knows.

I have had my passeger side go out once....and my drivers side once as well...good thing the seat warmer was under warranty...I swear when I got the seat fixed...it was 50% Hotter than before...any one else experience this?
