Fuel gauge broken?

I have a 2000 with 81,000 miles. Suddenly, my fuel gauge is always at full or at 3/4 at the lowest. I have been setting my trip meter at fill-up so I have some idea where my gas level is, but I don't like doing this.

Does anyone know what might be wrong or how much it will cost to repair? I saw on-line that I may have to replace the sensor in the tank which could be about $400.

Thanks.

Lisa

Sounds like the typical fuel sender problem. Sit tight, we have a few members that can help out.

Is your car still under warranty?

I didn't buy it new...I bought it as a lease buyout, so I don't have a warranty.

Like Jim stated, this is a very common fault with these Fuel Level Sensors. It is more than likely a failed resistor, or failed wiper in the resistor pack. It can be replaced with out removing the fuel tank. As far as costs go to accomplish this repair I'm not sure. With labor costs (GM Dealership) at $75-100/hr. plus parts, I wouldn't be surprised if the repair cost is near $400. :) Good Luck with it. Actually I use my trip meter as the primary means for estimating fuel usage, and the fuel gauge on the inst. panel as secondary indication.

Thank you so much ! At least I can tell the garage (which is not a GM Dealership) what to look for.

Mine was just replaced under warranty. Don't know what it cost but it only took them 1/2 hr to do.

Your not alone mine does the same thing. I noticed a door in the trunk can you get @ the tank to replace the sender through there?
