Front wheel hub assembly replacement
 

So I need to replace the front drivers side wheel hub assembly. I just ordered the wheel hub assembly today from 1AAuto for $85 with shipping. I'm hoping this is going to be pretty straight foward swap. But i'm just wondering if anyone else has done this before and how hard it is?

Not hard, remove brake caliper, axle nut , speed sensor and 3 bolts that are hard to get at from behind.My bolts had lock tight on them and I broke a socket trying to get them off.Sometimes the bearing needs pesuasion to pop out.Drivers side fell out easy , passenger side I used a bearing puller.

Piece of cake. It's documented around here .. off to search.

Thanks, that doesn't seem that bad at all. I just hope all the bolts come out without any problem.

If you run into a problem with one of the bolts, just let us know. I ran into one that wouldn't budge. Had to take a hack saw to the hub, very carefully. Got the hub off, and even saved the bolt. ;) If I need to, I'll go into detail. Like I said, just post here if you run into trouble.

Had to save the bolt. There was no where I was going to get a grade 10 bolt. :lol:

Also, in the instructions that BillBoost referred to, you can remove the axle nut without having to install the spare tire as documented in the procedure. You can take a large center punch or screwdriver and insert it through the brake caliper into the fins on the rotor. This will hold the hub "locked" while you take the nut off. It worked perfect for me on my 2000 Cadillac Seville STS I did last week. My 2000 Bonneville SSEi has the same setup but I haven't had to replace it yet. The idea on the center punch came from my Alldata subscription on the replacement of the bearing and hub assembly.

Tip to avoid creaming the ABS terminal and wire. When you get ready to pull the hub off (and you want to keep the hub/ABS wire in one piece for some reason) remember the ABS terminal and wire needs to be pulled through the rather tight opening between the axle ball and the backing plate. This is tough to do unless you do the following: To get enough room to get the terminal easily through the meager opening use 2 hands. With the left hand push in and up on the axle shaft (come on; push in harder). If you apply enough force it will allow enough room to pull the terminal through the widest part of the opening (usually at the 5 o:clock position). If you do not do this you run the risk of tearing the terminal right off, but who cares; this is the old crap bearing we're talking about!

However you want to protect the new ABS terminal wire like a new puppy. Use the same process only finagle (is this a word?) the terminal through the opening from outside to inside.
