Default air intake temperature sensor

I was doing a little bit of work on the SSEi yesterday and forgot to hook the IAT sensor back up after doing the work. I took the car for a drive and the transmission was shifting like it had a shift kit on it! The shifts were extremely fast, and hard. It was literally shifting almost instantaniously, instead of the longer, soft shifts. I later found out I forgot to hook the IAT sensor back up after it through the check engine light. WHy would the IAT sensor being unhooked cause the transmission to shift like that? The shifting symptoms went away after the sensor was reconnected. (it was only driven 2 miles like that before I found the problem.)
