Replacement Cat Advice
I need to replace my catalytic converter. All of the "off the shelf" muffler shops are telling me that they have no listing for a replacement, but they can use a generic converter at a cost of about $200.
When I hear the word generic, I get concerned.
Has anyone had a cat replaced with one of those off the shelf units? Do they do the same job that the oem cat did?
Is buying a high-flow cat worth the extra time (ordering) and trouble (dealing with the rear O2 sensor readings)?
The 2 main issues that concern me are gas mileage and more flow restriction caused by an off the shelf cat that does not meet GM specs.

Right, Swartlkk says he believes 80K/8year and jastek1 says he'* over 100K so it'* past. And I'm saying it'* worth the call to ask if GM will kindly replace it for free.

I did try to get GM to replace it for free, or even just take care of parts or labor.
Not a chance.
The GM rep in my area does not seem to be too concerned about taking care of its customers. They would not even re-lube my intermediate shaft for free when I was 3,000K miles out of warranty (they had already lubed it twice while it was under warranty). GM has never given me anything but grief when it comes to service problems.
Gee, I wonder if this kind of customer care has anythig to do with GM'* current financial condition......... I am sure the thousands of laid off GM workers can take comfort in the fact that GM saved tons of money by refusing to do any work free of charge once the warranty period has lapsed.
To be fair, I have read posts about other people getting a break on out of warranty repairs and getting top notch service, but most of the time it is the dealer who steps up to the plate, not GM.
I love my car, but as you can see, I am not a fan of GM.
