"Service Engine Soon", OBD display & EGR Valve
My parents took their 2001 Pontiac Bonnevile SLE to the garage when the "Service Engine Soon" (SES) light illuminated. For $400 the garage said they would replace the EGR valve. 
Well, I decided to do it myself for $150 (valve, gasket and shipping). 
It is an easy change out. Surprisingly, the SES light remained lit. This raises several questions:
Is there a seperate manual procedure to extinguish the SES light? If not, does this suggest that there are other problems. If so, is there an OBD code display that will help in IDing the problem?

Thanks for the reply Mike. A couple of questions:
1) What does a decent scanner cost?
2) After having the battery disconnected for 30 mins, are there any codes or start up sequences I should be concerned with?

a decent one with readouts and everything ur looking close to $500 a regular scanner is about $250

Autozone will read your codes for free, but will not clear them. After the light returns (if it does), get it scanned there and give us the codes. A light indicates a current code, rather than an old history code.

You can get a scanner/code checker for about $70-$80. at Advance Auto,....it doesn't graphically display out the codes in it'* LCD display that it reads(those scanners cost over $200)but it displays the code number,and then you just look up that number in the manual(and CD that you load into your PC) that comes with it ,.......it also allows you to erase all codes from the car'* PCM.........
