Pulley Changeover to a 3.4"
I am a new member and although I have spent about an hour searching the archives and the Techinfo have found no instuctions for changing the SC pulley.
Our WV Grandprix club is meeting this Saturday and I would like to go ahead and install the 3.4" pulley on the SSEI. The guys are experienced with the actual changeover of the pulley, but we are concerned about how to get to it with the AC lines in the way.
Could some one point me to a former email or provide me with some assistance in details of what we should be expecting to be involved in the changeover?
Also, just out of my curiosity, if anyone was completely stock and just did the 3.4" changeover (I have a k/n fillter) did they have any negative effects that occured after the changeover. Some of the GTPer'* in our area notice a hesitation, like a fuel shortage in the 90mph range under full throttle after the 3.4" pulley change.

I know exactly what you are talking about.
I did the 3.4" pulley first with just a flat K&N filter.
As long as you use the proper pulley removal tool, the A/C can be nudged over a bit without problem. You just have to remove the coolant overflow bottle. Not disconnect it, just unbolt it and move it over.
The 90 mph hesitation is the PCM dumping the boost valve and this can be corrected by bypassing the solenoid.
The difference in torque is impressive with the 3.4" but I would recommend going to the 3.25" with a cone filter.
Make sure you install that trani cooler and swap to a 180 thermostat first.

The first mod to my 2002 SSEi was a 3.4 pulley. I was seeing around 7lbs of boost max with the stock pulley - this was in 70 to 90 degree temps and high humidity.
The 3.4 pulley gave me a hugh increase in torque and horsepower and would peg the boost meter at 10lbs very early and keep it there. I would estimate 10-11lbs of boost.
I am now running a 3.25 pulley with cold air intake, headers, roller rockers, and lightweight pushrods.
The boost meter still goes to max but not as low in the RPM band and doesn't seem to be pegged against the edge of the gauge. I am probably still putting out 10lbs or so but flowing much more air. The car has much better mid and and high range power.

I have a 2001 SSEi and am about to start my modifications myself. I'm having a custom exhaust done with a high-flow cat, CAI, and a 180 T-Stat. I expect to see a nice gain in HP and torque and haven't looked seriously yet into changing the pulleys although that would probably be my next step after I get headers installed. My question to you is were you completely stock when you threw in the 3.4"? I would obviously have the exhaust, cat, 180 t-stat, and CAI done at the very least so I would expect to see a more increase in power than you did if you only have the pulley? Also, do you have any existing warranty on your car? I have warranty (bumper-to-bumper) up to 150,000 and I'm sitting on 52,000 right now so I wanna be careful and not void my warranty...that'* why I haven't seriously considered the pulley yet. Just let me know..thanks!

Jason, before taking your car in for warranty service, you'll have to remove the 180 thermostat, CAI, pulley, and probably the headers, too. All of those things can bite you in the south end on a warranty claim.

My question would be this....for any company to void your warranty, they have to PROVE that the modification you make caused the failure in the part your'e trying to file a claim on. How can the 180 t-stat or the CAI cause a problem? I know the headers and pulley would have to be changed back but I'm just talking about the t-stat and the CAI? I"m having my CAI done true to form...a pipe welded and the CAI will be put in my fender and the PCM box moved. I'm just wondering how that could ever be cause to void my warranty since in reality, it IMPROVES the performance of the vehicle?

Will (or anyone else who knows),
Actually, the headers should be able to stay too should they not? They really aren't going to cause any other problems for one and for two, no part of your exhaust systems is covered in a warranty anyways so how could even headers void it?

If the failure is traced to increased power due to the mods, then the dealer may deny the claim. ie. the trani is rated at 280 ft-lbs and the pulley will put it at about 320.
If the pulley is only 3.4" and looks like the original, they probably won't notice it. They didn't when I brought mine in. Likewise with the 180 thermostat.
I do swap the CAI back to original though. It looks too obvious.
I'm only 3 years into my 6 year warranty so I will wait to do the headers and exhaust.
I did the pulley only after installing a trani cooler. Then I did the CAI cone and noticed a bigger improvement.
If the pulley is only 3.4" and looks like the original, they probably won't notice it. They didn't when I brought mine in. Likewise with the 180 thermostat.

My warranty isn't through the dealer...it'* through Warranty Gold so the dealer really shouldn't give a crap. The only time anyone from the warrant people would come down, is if the engine or tranny went out (something really expensive) so I don't think that'd be a problem. I know they wouldn't notice a 3.4" pulley...question is....would the computer throw a code letting them know it'* there?
Also, why are you worried about waiting to do exhaust? I could understand headers maybe but the exhuast system itself even with a high flow cat makes a huge difference with a CAI and that definitely won't void your warranty....believe me I even asked specifically about that.
