Engine noise that increases with acceleration
Hello all,
I have a 2000 ssei. There is a noise coming from the 3800 supercharged engine that increases with acceleration. If I stomp on it, the noise really gets loud. It sounds almost like something is loose, like a fan. But it seems to be coming from the center of the engine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Does the sound go away after the motor warms up? Does it sound like a clicking noise? I had a similar problem that disappeared after I had the lower and upper intake manifolds replaced. It also was more prevalent during cold weather and as it is summer now I cannot be sure that the problem is completely solved but its a place to start. I'm not a gearhead, but that was my experience with my '01 SSEi.

Anyhow, if it'* a "raspy" metallic sound, see if you can hear it from the front of the engine. The water pumps on the 3800'* will sound like that when they are going out.
Use a long screwdriver or solid metal bar and lay it on top of the water pump and put your ear on it..
Otherwise, give us more clues to what you are hearing.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds more like a clunking sound and it is definitely a rotating part, almost like a cover being loose on a house fan. If I ease into the acceleration, it'* not as bad. I did have the upper and lower intake gaskets replaced about 15k mi. ago.

Raise the hood, rev it up by manually loading the throttle by hand, then listen & try to localize it to a specific area. Exercise extreme caution while working near rotating components.

How many miles/KM'* on the car?
Ozark..your upper manifold is a supercharger
Gaskets (especially lower intake gaskets) are a common issue.
I'm starting to wonder if the coupler may be showing wear. Once we talk further about the mileage/km'* on the car...we might have you pull a belts and check for play in the coupler.

jhut, I'd like to see you pull both belts and start the car to see if the noise is there.
