Default another problem GRRRRRRR(check gas cap)

ok here is the deal I got a 02 SLE I did a tune up to include cleaning the MAF and the throttle body and well I got a new alterrnator and a new tensioner. I also cleaned the IAC and got new plugs and wires and I got new tranny fluid and filter and fuel filter and got a K&N filter too. i think that all but covers the tune up except cleaning the egr valve which looks like a pain. My question is the CHECK Gas Cap code keeps coming back i even bought a new gas cap and it came back. and the other code that was thrown was a high idle code. The car will start on a cold start and rev to about 1500 rpms then back down to about 700-850. After I put the car in gear the rpms will jump then settle back down what could be the cause for all of this could it be a fuel pressure problem or a IAC problem or a spark plug thing but I doubt it they are the NGK TR55s. Plz help me. TIA

MAF, TPS, IAC and a vaccum leak are all suspect. What was the exact code thrown and were there any others?

The cannister vent valve which is by the back wheel may be the problem with the check gas cap. Just ran into that with a 2000 SSEi. Took it apart, cleaned and lubed it - so far, no more code.

Gas cap more than likely not the cause. This sounds like a vacum leak in the EVAP system. Check the vent valve as called out by Archon, it could be stuck in the open position.

yeah, this is what my car was doing when the TPS went bad. Well actually the one I bought was bad and so thats what threw me off. But anyways, when my MAF went bad, there were COMPLETELY different symptoms, the car will act REALLY funky...at times it was stalling, like you could drive up the road and then it would choke out, or something like that.

I vote TPS. Otherwise, like mentioned before, Vacuum leak or IAC.

As for the gas cap thing, I have NO idea how those sensors work in all your newer cars, so

The throttle position sensor has 3 wires going to it - black for ground, dark blue the signal voltage, and grey for the 5 volt reference signal. Turn on the key but don't start the car. Checking between black and grey should give you a 5 volt reading. Then check between black and dark blue. At idle the voltage should be around .4 to .6 volts or so (.4 being about the average). Then, slowly open the throttle to the wide open position. It should smoothly increase to more than 4 volts (maybe 4.2 or so). The farther away from the average of .4 volts at idle, the higher the idle speed will be, but the PCM should adjust for that. I'd think the IAC or a vacuum leak being the problem before the TPS for a high idle problem.

The cannister vent valve is by the driver'* side rear wheel. Follow the vacuum tube from the cannister (a black or grey rectangular box on the driver'* side about under the rear seat, next to the fuel filter) toward the back, and you'll see a much smaller plastic rectangular box (about the size of a deck of cards) on the slope by the rear wheel.

well here is a little update I changed the plugs from NGK tr55 to OEM plugs and the code has gone away and it feels like there is more power and a little more mileage.I also changed the coolant would that have anything to do with it

What was the code (DTC) initially? Changing spark plugs & coolant wouldn't have any affect on an evap problem. Was the "Check Gas Cap" warning displayed on the DIC or was it a DTC displayed on a scan tool? Let'* wait for the expets to chime in.

Did the code go away all by itself, or did you have it reset? If you had it reset, it could come back. As I was chasing a check gas cap DIC display around, resetting it would have it go away for as long as 2 weeks before it came back.

If it went away by itself, perhaps the code had something to do with the purge solenoid, which I think is in the same place on the N/A engines - about on top of the rear valve cover. Knocking some of those hoses around while changing the back plugs could have sealed something, although I'd think temporarily.

I can't think of any connection, other than that, were the plugs, wires, and coolant would affect the evap. system.
