Noise behind intsrument cluster
I'm getting a noise behind the guages in my 2000ssei that sounds like the speedo cable is rubbi ng or grinding. I don't know if our cars have a cable driven speedo or electronic....so my question is......could that be my noise........or does the steering wheel position sensor make a ginding/rubbing noise when it'* out of position? I've hade some SSS codes on the DIC lately and I do have a bit of clunking in the steering column..

When does it do it, Brian? While driving striaght ahead, or just on turns? Any particular speeds? The speedo is all electronic, so no cable. The clunking is likely the intermediate steering shaft. Has that ever been worked on? The most likely cause for the stability system warning is the position sensor, but bad wheel speed sensors could also cause it. Best way to determine that is with a scan.

I hear the grinding noise at low speeds, only from inside the car, sounds like something is turning and grinding at the same time. It sounded like my speedo cable did on my old 79 chevy impala, thats why I asked about our speedo. It goes away after speed gets above 20 or 30 mph. car is going straight when it occurs, no turning of the wheel when it occurs. I know what the intermediate shaft is like.....I've had it all along with my car and aside of some lubrication never done anything with it.
Stick my head out the window I can't hear anything......it definately is heard from within the cabin.
Now it'* starting to bug me.........like what now.........what is this leading upto..........something on its way out...........going to wear/break/start causing something else to occur.

Depending on the exact source, there is a TSB which relates to noise (like you're describing) coming from the instrument cluster. All the "needle" style gauges are driven by stepper motors and there is a known issue with play in the mechanisms/gears.
The cluster related noise generally occurs when a sweep test is done (when you first start the car) or when a needles moves up or down. Assuming it isn't related to another source altogether, this is more of an annoyance than a problem.

That sounds a lot more likely to the source of the noise......I watch my needle on the speed and it ties into the noise. Does the TSB suggest anything besides replacement to perhaps lesson the noise?

Unfortunately not. TSB #04-08-49-015A applies to a wide variety of vehicles (2003 - 2005 model year). Although yours is a 2000 it seems like a very similar problem, especially based on your description of the speedo being involved. Since yours works in essentially the same manner, it would appear to be related. The only remedy that GM offers is to order a replacement cluster from an authorized service centre. These clusters aren't a dealer serviceable item and must be sent out for repair.
At least as it applies to the affected model years, the problem won't cause an inaccuracy and GM recommends replacement only if the customer is insistant.
