Code Readers and resetting DIC
 

When the CHECK GAS CAP showed up on my DIC, I replaced my gas cap (after doing a thousand and one other things). While at the dealer the service tech said he would reset my code while I went to buy a new gas cap. He said the code read that it probably was the gas cap and I should be fine. How did he get the code? Can I buy a code reader? I used to have an old GM code reader I plugged in under the dash and I counted light flashes to determine a code does my 2000 Bonneville SSEi have a similar code reader? Can I then reset the computer after I fix a problem or is It something only a dealer can do?

You need an OBDII scantool. You can probably find one on Ebay, I have seen AutoTap software plugged into your OBDII port in the driver side footwell under the dash. AutoTap can clear PCM codes too.

You need a mobile computer (laptop) for AutoTap

Or you can goto Autozone and have them read your codes for free! They can't reset it though, only can tell you the code number. I plan on getting an Autotap before the summer is over.

Very true Taylor, however our new member friend is in Kitchener Ontario and we don't have the AutoZone franchise here.

Its better value to get a code reader instead of paying to get your codes scanned each time.

I like the autotap but its spendy ($279 us)
So I'm going to be a ginnea pig and am trying the $89 digimoto v3.6 with voice module. Should be in next week, will only work with obd2 but that all I need.

I use the Autoenginuity Scan Tool. Its a bit pricey-er, but it will connect to anything, and the module they give you (the OBDII interface) will work with a Palm Pilot, PC, Laptop, and Handheld PC (Dell Axim). You can scan, reset, monitor, and start diagnostics. In addition they have the speedtracer which will give you rough dyno results as well as 0-60, and 1/4 miles times.

actually found them on eBay. After I got it I communicated back and forth a lot with one of the company's founders. Great guy, helped me trouble shoot my car, and a friends car.

Wow thanks for the feedback. I would be interested in finding out from Pontiac Dad how well the Digimoto scan tool works, because the price tag is cetainly attractive. To everyone who posted the scan tool companies should send you a rebate cheque because I read their websites from start to finish. You can not get any better or efficient advertising than that

It looks like, with the digimoto product, that you have to puchase interface boards for each different type of interface. GM uses one type, ford another, Chrysler, imports etc... If the Bonneville is all you own it should be fine, but for the money you can get all protocls to scan all differnt cars with the Autoenginuity.
