Got a '01 SSEI and just noticed a steering problem. At slow speeds it feels like something is loose in the steering or vibirates and I can hear a very light clunck moving the wheel. I called the dealer and he says there'* no intermediate steering shaft recall on this car. Anyone else has this problem?

Dozens have had the problem. Your IMS is going slowly, but surely. Just a poor design by GM

Yeah, that video you took was great. In that case it was the sound that was worth a thousand words.

Just got mine serviced today by my mechanic. Simple lube kit from GM and a hour labour did the trick for mine. Clunking is gone. Car has 48000 miles on it. Most guys who have replaced the shaft seem to get it back later so lubing it seems to be the best value for the fix. Such a common problem with these cars most dealers and GM mechanics know the problem and the fix.

True Mike might be a short term fix, but addup the cost of 2 or 3 replacements versus 3 or 4 "proper" lubrications and I think the value is there to lube it. Due to the poor design fault it will probably never go away for good, but I would weigh the cost/benefit over the life you own the vehicle. Mine was lubed for free by my mechanic by the way while he replaced the front tie rods and did a front wheel alignment. Can't beat that solution no matter how long it lasts!

Absolutly true, i lube mine in spring for the last time, and it will stay on my car a while,
thats just annoying, but i can live with that.
