Car trouble
Hello,
My SSEI has just reached 100K and is now starting to exhihit very strange symptoms.
1) oil indicator is constantly showing 120 after the car is started, changing oil did not work.
2) Tachometer just stops after 10 minutes, car seems slightly sluggish. this is intermittent.
3) Engine shuts down while driving, have to place in neutral and re-start. sometime have to pull over a try many times to get car started again. Battery is strong.
4) Check engine soon light appears now and then
I took car to dealer when I could barely get the car started, they ran diagnostics and blamed it on the vacume hose, it was replaced and everything appeared fine for a week and half. Now it start all over again. today the engine quit as I was getting on the tollway at 5 miles an hour. That felt great. I love my bonneville, its my third one.
And I have only 2 more payments. help!!!!

1) Oil pressure is a common fix - replace the oil pressure sending unit (on the side of the oil pan)
2) i have the same problem - VERY intermittant.. i havent gotten it to fail at any opportune time to check into it, but it is most likely the crank position sensor. if any problem is trriggered in the computer about crank position the tach gets disabled until the next start cycle
3)more than likely related to #2, when the crank position sensor gets a bad reading and throws the computer out of whack and it can not find the proper postion of the crank
4)once again, probably related to #2&3.. we need to know what codes are stored in the computer to help you out here properly

There must be a way to jump the pins on the ALDL to read the codes! Does anyone here know what they are? I know that on my Corvette you can jump pins #3 and #4 to read the codes for the "Service Ride Control" system. There has to be some way with the Bonnevilles.

To our knowledge the only way to read codes is with a scanner. Many have looked further and not found an answer.
Not saying it can't be done, merely saying.. to our knowledge...

back on topic.
Take your car to a local autozone of advance autoparts and have them scan the car and let us know what codes are stored if any

You can skip the Advance Auto. I saw the memo to all stores from the Corporate office.
.....No more scanning of customer vehicles is allowed due to possible liability issues.....
Basically some dufus probably sued because the scan said part X was the most likely culprit and that didn't fix the problem.

OK, done some research, OBDII is not easy to read, like OBDI. Codes have too many digits to keep track of. There are several Code readers out there that are inexpensive.

Thank you so much for all your replyies! very interesting. I took my car into the dealer this morning and just received a call back. They found 3 things they want to fix:
1) regarding the oil indicator, they want to replace the sensor
2) The Tachometer dropping is due to crank position sensor-needs replacing
3) engine shutting down - is related to #2 but the scan also indicated bad coils
4) Check Engine Soon light - showed errors but he did not give me the codes over the phone, I plan to get them when I pick up the car tomorrow. Total cost $708.50
I told them I will replace the oil sensor and coils. I my bill will be $504. Toastedoats was right on the mark!
Thank you all !
