Default Instrument Cluster Replacement

The gas gauge didn't work properly when I bought the car a few weeks ago, so the sending unit was replaced. This didn't solve the problem, so now the Instrument Cluster is going to be replaced on Wednesday. Just curious if this something anyone else has had to deal with. The car has 38,000 miles on it.

Thanks,

Mark

There have been a few people reporting "sticky" guages on these clusters. Was this work done at a dealership? Was this happening everytime you started your car or just intermittently?

There are functions available using a Tech2 to test the instrument cluster and perform sweep guages.

The gas gauge would perform the diagnostic sweep irregularly at start-up. It would sometime sweep from left to right, then settle in, but at other times it would peg to the right and rest against the speedometer surround. The cluster is being replaced at a GM dealer, after they diagnosed that the cluster, not the sending unit was the problem. The sending unit was replaced where the car was purchased, which was not a GM dealer. Thankfully, they are footing the bill though.

Sounds like they should have spent a little more time on a thorough diagnosis. Glad you didn't have to pay the bill. I expect it would have been a few bucks out of your wallet. Unfortunately, this can happen with shops that don't understand the electronics as well as they should.

Replaced my cluster with an e-bay cluster to resolve the problem. Both my coolant and gas gauges went nuts.

Cluster was swapped this morning. Gas gauge looks to be reading true now.
