Quick help with EGR cleaning
How far off base am I? I had the P1404 which refers me to the EGR, had it reset and it came back, I just pulled off the EGR and notice that the torx head bolt which appears to be spring loaded does not return all the time it seems to get stuck on occasion. My question is does this part disassemble any further or do I dare clean it as is somehow?
Thanks. 02 Bonneville SE

The TORX head thing is the pintle valve and if you can disassemble it any further i dont know how.
The pintle valve is spring loaded and should be air tight when seated. If the valve is not closing use something like dental tools to remove any carbon build up on the pintle face and shaft. The carbon does not come off easily but is worth the time to remove as a new E.G.R. is pricey.

The pintle valve sticks when pushed all the way in and I did not see much carbon build up around the seat. I figured the thing was faulty at best anyway so I took some contact cleaner and sprayed it into the other opening and cycled the stem until it seemed to work smoothly. I also sprayed a little wd-40. It seems to be a computer controlled electric solenoid that adjusts the position of the valve to allow different amounts of exhaust gas back into the intake. I'm not sure if its just coincidence or not but I ran the last 2 tanks of gas with the SES lite on and noticed that I got about 40 miles less on a tank. I'm going to NAPA to have the lite reset and will see if it comes back on again. Thanks.

That’* right you have to go through the open hole to scrape the carbon off the pintle shaft.
Sounds like you have it working ok now. The EGR valve on my 96 had thick carbon build up in that chamber, and I scraped carbon out of there for over an hour.
