my 2001 bonneville has been doing this for about a yr now and seems to be getting worse. little background: 190,XXX miles been babied since i got it...but about a yr ago i started noticing that upon start-up it would kind of sputter and kill, then on the second try it would start right up. So i started using shell gasoline 93 octane. After using shell 93 octane, the problem stopped. After abt six months I started using shell 87 reg gas...seems like thats when the problem started again! so i started using shell 93 octane but this time it didnt stop the problem. I've recently done the whole "tune-up" thing...plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, even ran some stp fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. even after all this my car still sputters on the first attempt to start, then kills, then the second start it cranks right up! my guess is the fuel pump is gettting weak and doesnt pump enough pressure on the first attempt to start, but on the second attempt the pressure is alrdy built up so it cranks right up! also if i drive down to the corner store and run in and run out it cranks right back up, but if it sits for a couple hrs, then i get the no crank on first try, but crank on second. Is my fuel pump getting weak? Should it alrdy have gone out, like i said its been a yr since this has been happening!! Pls Help!

What is the trim level of your car? SE, SLE, SSEi?

You should be fine running 87 Octane then. Check that your fuel pressure is in spec with the quote above.

Fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator are in need of replacement!
