*cough* 98 SE

My Bonne has seemed like it would barely turn over, and 2 days ago I took it for a drive, then came home and shut it down, then tried to start it and it wont start. I already bought a new battery (old one was 4 years old so it was gonna need a new one soon) I can also hear the fuel pump prime when the key is turned to on so it isnt the fuel pump. I don;t know where else to look. When I try to start it it just goes "click"



I wish it wasnt parked in the most annoying spot on out driveway when it died atleast because now everyone has a hard time getting around and and they have to drive in the grass.

Two quick questions

Is the clicking at the starter solenoid?
How'* the coolant Level?

I have a question, my car would do the same thing, when I tried starting it, it wouldn't start but when I stopped cranking and turned the power off (key out), the SECURITY light stayed on and when it went off, I could start it again. Do you see the SECURITY light on?

1. Wheres that at?
2. Barely low because it burns/leaks coolant since I got it but not excessively. (and I know about the UIM problem)

Nope its not on

I think the first thing to do is make sure it'* not hydro-locked. Try rotating the engine by hand but don't force it! You can also remove all 6 plugs & see if the starter will work.

The solenoid is on the starter. Right front of the motor when standing in front of the car looking at engine. Kinda hidden by the front exhaust pipes.

Tap on the starter with a hammer while someone tries to crank it. Often times if the starter is going bad, the jolt from a hammer will will free it up and let it start the motor.

Something is clicking in the starter area. It will only click once though. I tried tapping on it but no beans :(

Im going to get a scanner tomorrow and see if it has a stored codes. And IF it is the starter that is bad is it hard to replace?

The starter is real easy to replace, 2 bolts hold it in and IIRC 3 small bolts to hold on the splash shield.

And it is also not locked up. I can spin the engine nice and easy

If it is the starter, here is a little more detailed list of instructions to change it out. This is from a '95 SE, but there should be few if any differences with your '98.

Remove the splash shield that'* attached to the front crossmember under the front of the car. Most of the fasteners will be 10mm.
Remove the negative battery cable and push it away so it can't touch the battery.
Remove the plastic cover (*) from the bottom of the bell housing and up around the starter (More 10mm bolts - wiggle and twist to get it out)
Unbolt the electrical connectors on the starter
Remove the two vertical bolts that hold the starter up (15 mm?)
Drop the starter out (May have to twist and turn a bit.)
Make careful note of any shims
Clean the area where the starter contacts the engine/bellhousing
Install the new starter with the same thickness of shims you removed.
Re-do the electrical connections.
If the starter binds, or makes a loud noise, add shims until normal.
Re-install the splash shield(*)

Note: Beware! Compare the old starter to the new one carefully before you take the new one home. Some cheap rebuilds use longer through bolts that will need to be trimmed flush to fit.
