Will a '02 Grand Prix motor fit the '95 Bonneville?
 

I am new to the list and stayed up late last night reading all the great posts. What a fantastic resource! As a new member I have a question. I have a 95 Bonneville with the 3800 series II motor, vin code K. I believe I have the cracked upper intake and filled the bottom end with water and now hydro locked. I didn't know what it was until last night - thanks for the info! The motor has 160,000 miles and I am considering replacing with a newer motor rather than make the intake repairs.

I have found a motor from a 2002 Grand Prix, vin code "K" with only 14,000 miles at a reasonable price. Does anyone know if this motor out of an '02 Grand Prix will fit into the 95 Bonneville? WOuld there be differences in the ECU used to control the motor?

IF this doesn't work, I found the posts to repair the intake, but figured if this motor will fit, might be a better buy for the low mileage. Any help is appreciated!

I believe they are the same. As long as the mounts are in the same place, you should be alright.

It should be pretty much a direct swap. Only thing that worries me would be the tranny. You have the 4t60e, the GP has the 4t65e, might need some custom work there.

But Series II's will fit on both trannys. I think it will mount fine. Just keep your stock computer.

Us 95 people have OBD I computers.

I think you may actually need the tranny and engine wiring harness / pcm to go with it. The 4t60e and 4t65e are different trannys. The 4t65e is electronically controlled where as the 4t60e is still partial hydrolically controlled.

Even though they are both series 2 there may be some differences in the motors between those two years. An example of this is the 92-93 series 1 SC and the 94-95 series 1 sc engine have different TB's, SC pulleys, and a few other parts. To do a swap with out the PCM might be possible but it may also become a nightmare if things don't match up PERFECTLY.

just swapped a 3800 out of a 02 impala with 22k into a 96 se. had to use the 96 exhaust manifolds, along with a couple other items

It should fit. You will mostlikely have to change the location of the engine mounts and other things, but it should be almost a direct fit. Like was already said, you will have to keep the exhaust manifolds from the old engine so it will bolt up to your exhaust because it is a different platform, so the ones on the new engine are going to be different because they were made to fit a W-body car, not an H-body car.

Yea, Grand Prixs have that U-Bend, so the exhaust setup is different.

the u bend is nowhere near the exhaust manifolds...i believe it is actually after the cat and holds the rear o2 sensor up top

Oh, I always thought it came from the manifolds. I don't know GP's too well.
