What years Series II cylinder heads are compatible
 

I need to either get my current heads reconditioned, or find some low-mile used heads. What years Series II heads interchange? This is for my 1997 SE. Thanks.

I won't pretend to be the expert, but I think 98 or newer for you would be safe. Wait for a second educated opinion.

What's wrong with your heads? We RARELY have issues with them.

Well, that's just the thing. Maybe nothing is wrong with them. If you read the second page of my thread "crank/no start", you'll see that I had bad compression on both banks. I suspect that it was the head gaskets, but I don't know that the heads are good. I do know that the cylinders that were getting coolant in them have valves that don't look so good. I'm just exploring options. It would be cheaper to find some low-mile heads from a newer engine than have mine rebuilt.

I've read somewhere that the earlier series 2 heads are more prone to cracking around the valve but I'm not sure how true that is.
Make sure your not getting any coolant in your oil because that will eat away at your bottom end.
Have you checked to see if it's your upper intake manifold?(Common problem)

Oh, it was getting coolant in the oil alright. I just don't know for how long. If you're bored, read my "crank/no start" thread down this page a little. I already have the heads off. I can't say for sure that it's the head(s), the head gaskets, or other. I just know that I had erratic compression, and there is definitely a problem down there. I can't just throw my old heads back on and hope it was the head gaskets.

My original set had a tick. Unsure of my second set as the valves were all white (my front exhaust manifold caught fire somehow). My third set has the tick as well. I assume it is a problem with the valves, but I suppose that it could be lifters. I just have bad luck with engines I guess.
