how meny miles? could be as simple as a bad lifter. is it at idle and then goes away with rpms? or does it stay going throughout the rpms?

I recommend taking the car to a repitable automotive repair facility to see exactly what is wrong with the car. It may be what the guy said, but until you have the car looked at by a professional, I wouldn't assume that the engine is toast just yet.

Given the information, it'* impossible to make any intelligent diagnosis. There'* all kinds of things that can make a knocking noise. Best to take it to someone with a little experience. A bad lifter will make more of a ticking noise than a knock and may go away after it pumps up. An exhaust leak can sound like a lifter too. A connecting rod bearing going south will be more of a clunk, deeper and more solid sounding than a lifter. Easy to tell the difference if you know what one or the other sounds like to begin with. How'* your oil pressure? A toasted engine bearing is normally accompanied by a significant drop in oil pressure.

There is one thing that can cause a horrible knocking sound on the outside of the engine - a harmonic balancer that is coming apart. That is the big pulley on the front of the engine at the bottom. When you take it to a reputable mechanic, make sure to ask him to check out that possibility. Otherwise......could be a balance shaft bearing, rod bearing, main bearing, piston pin, lifter, rocker arm, or camshaft. They all sound different. A good mechanic should be able to make a pretty good guess for you - and shouldn't charge much for just a listen and a guess.
