Default Tranny questions

There might be a problem with my transmission. i was wondering if a tranny out of a 1996 park avenue would work in my 92 Olds 88?

nope
totally different trans... You're looking for a '92-'94, and make sure you get the right gear ratio

The best way to find compatibility is to run it through www.car-part.com and then match gear ratio. car-part will nail down the compatible years/models for you.

Default YES, make sure you make the correct swap

You want to look at the number code on the tranny, and keep it the same. it'* a 4-digit code, like 3TCW, (this may not be an actual code, but they are formatted this way) this will ensure you get the right gear ratio and any other important minor or major differences...

Default to add...

the first digit in this code is the year, 3CTW for instance is a '93. There are some swaps year to year, like a "3" code will work with a "4" code in some cases, like Wilwren said. But there are subtle differences that the code will tell you, like if a tranny has the temp sensor for traction control, for instance. Some of this can be worked around, some more difficult than others. I have successfully re-wired trannies to make them compatible, but that takes serious attention to detail, I have also reconfigurated the pin-outs on the harnesses, making the compatibility more widespread, or swapped gear ratios.. But you need to make damn sure you've got it right or you are pulling it out again. There is a chart that explains the differences in the ATSG manual, and maybe in the bonneville service manual. This code also tells you the gear ratio.. Best be, match the code perfectly, then there'* no issue.. Mike
