Default After tranny swap, this one doesn't work either, HELP

Mechanic called today, jy tranny with new TC installed. He took it down the road for a test drive, it shifted hesitantly and would not go into overdrive. He got back to the shop, check tranny fluid, got back in it, and it will not move in any gear, forward or reverse.

All hookups and plugs were identical to the original tranny, but is it still possible that the jy tranny is a mismatch (different internals)? If so, when I go to get another one, is there a way to make sure that I get the exact one (other than pulling the side cover)? Is there a way to know by the VIN Code?

If not a mismatch, is there a simple fix?

Man is this turning into a nightmare!!!

Perfect example of why the cheapest route is not always the best way to go....

The neat thing about the 4T60-E'* is, even if you were to completely sever the electrical connector to the trans, the trans will automatically go into "limp home mode" which would be 3rd gear. Yes, I have actually tried this. Don't romp on it.

Anyhoo. Not having ANY gear would be an indication that the pump is not getting the oil for some reason. I could see if the filter came dislodged from its normal spot, this would starve the pump.
Or, the pump drive shaft is fubar'd.

DIFFERENCES:
The best way to get what was original in your car is to go by what your RPO sticker says and if you have access to YOUR original trans I can help you decipher exactly what you need and I can tell you exactly what cars to pull it from.

If its at LEAST the same year, even with a mismatch differential, you should have no troubles other than a engine light for a mismatched diff speed.

This is what you need to look for on the transmission itself...

Mike, Once again, thanks. You've been extremely helpful, and quick to respond. This jy tranny supposedly came out of a 95 buick with the 3800 motor. It also has a GM Master Mechanic sticker from a rebuild (unknown as to how long ago). The original tranny is sitting on the mechanic'* shop floor and if I have to go after another one, I'll have to go get it and take it with me. So, I should be able to look for that tag.
Since it actually did shift when the mechanic first took it out, although not well, would it be beneficial to have him drop the pan and check the filter? Could the filter clog due to non-use, and would that also keep it from shifting into OD? I didn't have him change the filter when he installed it.
At this point, what would you do?
Man, I really despise not being able to do this myself!
Thanks, Tim

The 95 Buick might have had a different final drive ratio, and that'* it.

If you can, take a picture of the trans ID tag and post it here.

Dropping the pan should have been the first thing done. At least to verify no broken parts in the bottom.

So, if it was me? I would drop the pan, and inspect the filter. That means OPENING the filter to inspect for metal shavings etc. If the mechanic will let you(hopefully he is an understanding one considering what you have been through) goto walmart or autozone and pick up a 1 gallon jug of cheap trans fluid and give it to him to put into the trans when he'* done.

Mike, I'll go ahead and stop in the morning and pick up a gallon of fluid and a filter kit, and get him to drop the pan. If no parts or particles in the pan or filter, I'll go ahead and get him to try that. At this point, what'* another 25 bucks, especially if it works. Hopefully, the fluid just thickened up in the filter, and nothing burnt up during the test drive.
While I'm there, I'll try to get shots of every tag I find on both trannys.
Thanks, Tim
