VSS Location
 

Hello,

My '92 Bonneville (65k miles) has not been shifting right lately. I have to manually shift between 2nd and 3rd gear as these are the only gears that work. Also the speedometer doesn't work. The error codes from the SES are 24 and 31. After reading many posts about similar problems I'm thinking its probably the VSS. Problem is I can't find the location of the VSS in my Chilton manual or in the forums. Can anyone tell me where its located and if this sounds like a good place to start. Thanks

Sounds more like a solenoid...but a VSS could do it too.....hrmmm

anyways, the VSS is located on the end of the transmission, on the passenger side of it. On the very tip. You will have to remove the tire and the splash guard to get it visible. It's towards the top, I think it's a lil 3 plug connector. At least this is the way it is on my 95. Kinda fun to get at. How well does you speedometer work?

The speedometer doesn't work at all. Just sits there at 0. Thanks for the info on the VSS.

When the speedometer quit working, was that when the tras quit shifting it's self? Makes sense?

Yes, the speedometer quit working when the shifting problem started. Today when I left work the speedometer was at 0 and I had to shift manually from 2nd to 3rd. Then all of a sudden the spedometer came up to speed, the SES light went out and it shifted into OD just fine. I went out just now and its back to 0 and not shifting right. I'm going to see if I can't get a VSS tomorrow and try replacing it. I hope thats the problem.

Do you happen to have any other accesories in the car failing? Because I had a similar problem with my truck about 2 yrs back where the ignition module burned out, and forced the PCM into "default mode" or "Limp-in mode" which basically cuts out everything but what's needed to operate the vehicle and get it to the dealer with doing the minimal amount of damage to the drivetrain. Also limits the vehicle's power and shifting ability.

Well, I replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor... no luck. Only took about 10 minutes though so that was good. Not sure what I'm going to try next... I guess I'll try and track down the wires and see if there is a break in them or something. Anyone else have any ideas?

PS Lakeville: No nothing else is failing... just the speedo and the shifting.

Hrmmmm....Kinda gettin outta reach on this one for me....But gonna go with a wild guess of thinking that maybe your PCM is takin a dive on ya?

I hope its not the PCM but we'll see. I tried to trace the wires last night to see if they are bad. Weird thing is, on the sensor the wires are a blue color and yellow. But according to the schematic in my Chilton manual they should be red and green :?: :!: and go to the D10 and D11 plugs on the PCM. On my PCM the wires in D10 and D11 are black or gray. I'm really confused now. The diagram for the '91 has purple and yellow wires for the VSS and they go to B9 and B10 which are the right colors on MY PCM. I'm wondering if my car doesn't have the wiring from the 91 model or if the chilton manual is wrong? Like I said, I'm really confused now.
