VATS problem

I had a no start because of security chip tonight with a key. I waited for the light to go out and started the car with the key. About 5 minutes later the security light came on solid while I was driving. Stayed on for about 10 miles and then went off.

I drove the car later in evening and the security light came on about 4-5 mintues away from home and stayed on for a couple of minutes and went off.

Can anyone tell me what's happening? My key resistors check out in the middle of the range. I figured the nostart came with a key picking up crud from my pocket-lint or grit or something causing it not to make contact to read in the cylinder.

If it was the key, it wouldn't have started.

I'd look elsewhere, or just keep an eye on it for now.

Most likely you need to clean the contacts in the ignition switch. I think there are procedures in techinfo or search.

Clean contacts--tech info.

Thanks. I will check for that.

If that doesn't fix you up or only helps temporarily you may want to consider over riding the system by adding in the resistance value needed to start the car. It's pretty simple once you locate the right wires.

That's where I thought I was headed -- resistor replacement.

But the light coming back on worried me until your comment about the contacts inside the key cylinder might need cleaning. The keys swung when I went over a bump the second time the security light came on; that could have changed the contact pressure inside the cylinder.

I don't find a procedure for cleaning the cylinder key contacts. Can someone link me to the right place? Or suggest what to use to clean the contacts?

Got you covered. Found it by searching with clean and vats
