Default Misfire in cylinder 5

Hey guys!
I'm new here, so go easy on me.

I recently took my '99 SE to have a recall fixed, some kind of fuel pressure related fix.
Anyways, about a week later, I'm driving along, when all of a sudden the engine light starts flashing speratically, and the whole car starts to shake.

So I stop at the local AutoZone, and have them scan the car. The scanner read a P0305,
cylinder 5 misfire. So I buy a set of spark plugs and wires, and the coils had never been changed, so I bought those as well. Figured if I was change plugs, might as well do it all at the same time.

Anyways, I changed all that, reset the PCM, and scanned it again.
The car is still running rough/missing, and the same code is being thrown.
Any ideas what could be causing this? What else should I check?
My wife has taken the car to the dealer to see if it was something they did, when they fixed the recall.

I hope it was something they did, that way, I won't have to give up my arm and one of my legs to have my car back.

It could be fuel or spark related.

Having just done plug/wires/coils, they are ruled out.

Fuel pressure could be a possibility and that would be dealer problem since they just messed with your fuel regulator. The wiring to that injector could be loose or something if they needed to remove it for room to work on the regulator or remove the fuel rail.

Other than that, checking battery connections for corrosion (they probably disconnected it) and then possibly the ICM and or ICM connections. (Ignition Control Module, located directly under the coils)

Those would be my guesses...

Since they just worked on it, my first look would be at the fuel rail and injectors, like Bill mentioned above. Just to make sure they didn't dislodge or misconnect something.

Righeeeeooo we had a member that found his connectors on his injectors were out of order. One side went 1, 5, 3

Bad part is he'* the only one that works on his cars. Also a possiblility, I would think you'd have two misfires though.

OK sorry guys.
This was a waste of a post.

My wife called me right after I posted.
The dealership said the #5 coil pack is misfiring.
They told me they would have to replace the #5 plug, wire, and coil, and they would do all this for the low low cost of $680. She laughed in their face, and took the car back home.

Let'* see:
$2 for a spark plug
$5 for a plug wire
$22 for a coil pack
$651 for labor?

Not gonna happen. They must have seen my wife and thought she was just some dumb chick. Little do they know, she rebuilt her '74 nova with a .383 stroker motor.

So I guess we got a bad coil from AutoZone.
So hopefully when we change that coil, that'* all the problem is.
I will update this post tonight.

Swap a couple of coils around and look for the problem to still be on #5.

Possible electrical connections at battery and ICM still as well as possible ICM troubles.

I doubt your coils were bad to begin with. I'd bolt the old ones back on and run with those. Return all three to AZ if it runs fine.

Not an option Mark.
I threw the old ones away last week.
Besides, I noticed an immediate power gain after changing out the old ones.
The car has 156k miles, so they needed changing soon anyways.

I will be changing the coil pack at lunch, so hopefully in about 2 hours I will be back to post some good news.

I'm gonna try changing the packs around like Bill mentioned, and check to see if the same code is thrown. Pray for me guys, I'm poor, can't afford to get too much further into this.
Fingers and toes are crossed, I'll let ya know what happens!

P.*.- Thanks for all the suggestions guys, that was some quick responses!

If I read your original post correctly, you said you had the misfire and then replaced coils, wires, and plugs. Based on that, it would seem highly unlikely that the same exact coil was bad from A.Z. Try switching the coils and make sure what the problem is. Look again at the injector wiring and connections.

And send us the $659 in labor to replace a coil, wire, and plug, lol.

Meanwhile..if you find it to be an ICM and you mention being short on money. I've got a few hanging around for much less than the parts places would be asking.

(Trying to save you some money..not even a shameless plug)
