Need gasket help
Hi all. I bought a 180 thermostat for my 95 SE and I'm planning on installing it this weekend. I bought the gasket that goes on the thermostat but I had to special order the gasket for the thermostat housing...(nobody has them and a few places have said you can't get them). Anyway, the gasket came in but it lists that it'* for a 1990-1994 231 V6 VIN C, L,1. My car is a 95 with a Series II 3.8. Is the gasket the same? The part I have is a Fel-Pro 35534 and it replaces a 25535214.

Most of them are the same. I think mine is off a 350 chevy. Autozone only had the o-ring, not a gasket. I had some extra'* in my tool box from either a big block or small block chevy. Trim it and it works just fine.

Ok, I went home last night and I checked the gasket vs. the housing (without taking it apart) and it looks like the housing will fit. The gasket is the typical oval shape with a little leg that sticks out. I can see the leg on the current gasket. Anyone know what'* different?

I finally installed my thermostat and I just wanted to post my findings. Everything went well despite a few setbacks. The tstat housing gasket is different, Series I to Series II. The position of the bolt are offset differently in relaton to the center hole. I managed to cut the center hole out a bit and I RTV'd the heck out of it....
I also had a problem with the gasket the goes around the thermostat. I don't know if it was for a Series I or not, but the gasket that came off the old tstat has a flat edge. The one I got from the parts store, had an edge like a flush mount. I used the old gasket and just cleaned it up.
All and all nothing leaked and my temp doesn't reach 200.
Just passing it along.

Glad it worked out. And just so you don't feel overly "ghetto", when I still lived at home, my Dad and I never bought gaskets for stuff like this. We just had a big sheet of gasket material. If we changed a part like a T-stat, we would just cut one ourselves out of the material. I once used a couple of layers to make valve cover gaskets for a 350 from a Caprice I drove.

My buddy the mechanic and I did some work to the car last night. Part of it was the transmission fluid change. He told me that we were reusing the original gasket. When I asked why he told me to wait, then showed me once it was off.
Original gasket in this particular area is metal w/rubber in it. New one is just total rubber. Original was deisigned to be reused for the life of the car. I took his word for it and it'* not leaking at all...cleaned up and good to go.
