Default Trans being a ... well you know.

It'* done this to me once before, but when in park. However today I was backing out of my friends garage at idle when the car just shut off!

Like I said, it did this once when sitting idle (parked) in another driveway.

My idle is 900-1000rpms...normal?

Nothing seems wrong with the engine though, runs strong and when you floor is the power is there. But this is why I suspect a transmission issue:

I was cruising home at 63mph in overdrive (cruise control OFF) when I felt the car jitter a little as if it shifted out of gear. I said to myself "What the? Oh maybe its the EGR going". I thought this because I've been feeling slight IMAGINARY bumps in the road when cruising at low rpms with no rpm change. First though was EGR, so I've just been putting off getting to that. Anyway back to the issue at hand...
I looked down after feeling the jolt and all gauges appeared normal when suddenly it felt like the car got confused, then shifted out of gear, and my face went white when I saw the speedo jump from 63 to over 80mph!!!!!

I looked down at my shifter to make sure I was in Drive because it felt like I was in neutral, just then the car went back to normal. There was no speed change or jolt, just the feeling of the trans shifting. This all happened VERY quickly so I didn't see if my rpm'* went wild or not, but it freaked me out none the less.

Any thoughts?

Ok now I'm getting pissed!

The back story:
I've been losing complete power in my car a few times here and there. Basically one day I was idling in a driveway and the car shut off for no reason...but she started right back up and ran fine. Last night I was backing out of a friend'* garage and the whole car turned off again, but like I expected I turned the key off then back on and she fired up.

Update:
Well today REALLY freaked me out. I pulled out of the Mobil gas station after filling up, well as I turned onto Main St. the car started to die and I yelled "OH HELL NO YOU DON'T!" and it was as if she was coughing for fuel. Kinda like an old muscle car on a cold day about to die. Well somehow by giving her a little gas she stayed alive and I drove on to the tire shop about 15 miles away. Well get this... I went to go pass a slow truck going 50mph and I had almost NO POWER!!!

I looked down and the needle couldn't even go past 70mph with me at WOT. I noticed that if I just baby'ed her and never gas it enough gas to downshift in D I had all the normal cruising power just as before. However, after 4000 rpm the car just made alot of noise but hardly no acceleration. Ok now I was pissed, so I pulled into Autozone and turned her off. I checked under the hood and nothing looked abnormal, so I started her back up and kept on going to the tire shop all pissed off. Well on the way home I floored it and TA DA the power was back. What in gods name just happened here?????

Scantool, Kyle. Very soon. I suspect an ignition or timing problem.

I through up the idea of a Crank Sensor. What about a fuel problem?

Although very vague, here are my suggestions. Check your fuel system first, filters, injectors, little things like that. If any of them are clogged, would make sense that after 4000 rpm car just falls flat. Other options are your spark plugs could be fouled or not gapped correctly due to nitrous use. I am sure you are using copper spark plugs, they are not meant to last that long, that'* why they are cheap! That'* for starters, sometimes coil packs go out and such. But do you have SES lights?

Tranny could be dying too. Need more info or you need to drive it around more under different situations to see what happens. When my trans was dying it would slip but I doubt it would stall the engine. The TQ would just frewheel.

Give us more info to help you out.

SES lights come on sometimes but never when it dies. I just turn the car off then back on and the light goes away...so I suspect a soft code. Problem with a scantool is that the local shop makes me wait a friggin WEEK before they can get my car in to do a 10 minute job.

And I take it if I have to install a new crank sensor I have to take the harmonic balancer off? :?

Not sure what info you guys need. But tomarrow I'm gonna pull the plugs to check them out, and then put a nice clean PCV valve I got from a 92 Regal (part numbers match) because my current PCV is all nasty and cover with oil. Maybe the local dealer will scan my car on a Friday, but its not gonna be cheap. Auto shops are good are rapping people.

BTW: I won't be going to the MN meet because of this, sorry.

I know, I'll ask if I can use it on my car real fast...but they will say "do you know how to use it?" and I'll reply "I'll figure it out, so go F--- off for once!".

What could be off with the crank sensor? Why would it be killing my engine? Teach me.

No MN meet!!??! NOOOOOOOOOOOO, but i guess you didnt drag today either. Think your PCM could be f&*(ed up? That chip might be having issues. If you still have the old one i'd throw it in and see how that goes.
