The intake problem only happens to the Series II NA engine from 95 - present. You may have a plastic intake, but there is no major concern for you.

Default Intake problem

You have a series I engine and the series II was known for a specific type of intake failure. However, I have a 94 SE and mine developed some leaks around the intake manifold gaskets. I noticed little pools of coolant on the outside of the intake manifold as well as a slight loss of coolant from the resevoir. It wasn't major but I replaced the gaskets anyway. In your case, just be aware of coolant level in your resevoir.

And go with a 180 thermostat. It will keep everything much cooler. Just in case....

Sorry I'll have to dissagree with you, my 94'* intake went at 136k , my mom owned the car at the time and had to have a newer engine put in. The series I engines intake fail too. Happened to my car

Ok these are the problems I am having:

It all started after I replaced my t-Stat with a 180 degree t-Stat

I began to loose coolant and have a coolant smell inside my car...traced it down to the t-stat housing was not tight coolant leaked but burned as soon as it hit the hot motor..ok problem solved???

Main thing since the t-stat change..at idling the temps go beyond the 200 degree mark looks like 230-250. When i drive it cools back down.

I have been keeping and eye on coolant and I have not lost any since I tightened down the t-stat housing!

thanks

After I put in my 180 t-stat I had to wire my fans to come on when I turn on the car , now its no higher than 190

Much more frequent with the Series II.

NeonGirl, is there a chance something else could have gone wrong during the t-stat install? Maybe it'* not opening up very well.

When the series 1 intake goes (and it'* rare), it'll be on the passenger end, where the coolant bypass hose enters. There'* a plastic fitting that breaks on the hose where it enters the intake, but sometimes it can damage the intake itself at this location, too.

It'* plastic, so it'* possible to damage if it gets too hot, nonetheless. The 180 stat should help.

I'm betting your thermostat isn't opening fully, or is partially restricted. Is the rubber o-ring installed right? The paper gasket? You may want to buy a higher quality tstat and swap it out again.
