Default transmission swap

I have a 96 non-SC SE bonneville. I will be having the transmission rebuilt or replaced. My questions are can the transmission be changed to a transmission of another year (97 etc). What is the 96 trans and can it be replaced by a Heavy Duty. What makes a trans a HD.

Thanks

The best way would be to have yours rebuilt or replaced with the same thing.

The computer will have trouble recognizing other years and other gear ratios. This would cause shifitng issues etc.

The HD transmissions to my knowledge were reserved for the supercharged models only and had different gearing.

96 is is 96 only for transmission swaps. No other transmissions are the same as the 96.
